Join a Challenger

Being a traditional bank just isn’t our thing, so we challenge ourselves to get creative in providing innovative banking solutions for Canadians.

How do we get there? With a talented team of inquisitive and agile challengers that break through the status quo. So, if you’re passionate about redefining the future of banking—while having fun—this could be your next big opportunity.

Our company continues to grow, and today we serve more than 670,000 people across Canada through Equitable Bank, Canada's Challenger Bank™, and have been around for more than 50 years. Equitable Bank's wholly-owned subsidiary, Concentra Bank, supports credit unions across Canada that serve more than six million members. Together we have over $125 billion in combined assets under management and administration, with a clear mandate to drive change in Canadian banking to enrich people's lives. Our customers have named our EQ Bank digital platform (eqbank.ca) one of the top banks in Canada on the Forbes World's Best Banks list since 2021.

Equitable Interview Process

As we continue to scale our team, candidates selected for our comprehensive interview process may be considered for a different level — either higher or lower — based on their interview performance. This equitable hiring approach allows us to ensure that talented individuals from a variety of industries are set up for long-term success within EQB’s dynamic, growing environment. Our goal is to support candidates in building lasting careers, rather than relying solely on perceived experience. The hiring committee will thoughtfully assess each candidate’s skills and potential, and adjust the level of the role as needed to create the best possible fit.

The EQ Bank Engineering Team

EQ Bank Engineering Team has been advocating building best-in-class branchless digital banking experience to advance millions of Canadians’ personal financial goals since its inception. The team believes the more agile and seamless banking features we build, the more wealth opportunities Canadians can unlock. Engineers in EQ Bank adopt the agile mindset to continually create, test, deploy, improve, and scale banking digital services. Our partnership with Wise, Nesto, Ratehub, Flinks, Borrowell, and Neo Financial has given us top-notch banking consumer insights, and therefore, these insights allow the Engineering Team to build a differentiated and unique digital banking platform. The team is on an 18-to-24-month transformational journey and ready to expand more banking features by growing double-digit team size to triple-digit. Join us to lead engineers on a transformational journey!

Purpose of Job
The Manager, Software Engineering is part of the team that enables EQ Bank’s Challenger Bank aspiration: An agile banking platform to put the power in customers’ hands. Every feature we build is designed to give our customers an edge over their money to maximize their wealth - safely. You will use cloud-native technologies and product-centric agile methodologies to transform, launch new capabilities and features, and ongoing business value for our digital bank apps.

You will take charge of the Fraud POD responsible for safeguarding every customer interaction on EQ Bank’s digital platform. Reporting to the Director, Engineering, you will own the full engineering lifecycle of our fraud-prevention services: event-driven APIs, data pipelines, and monitoring that integrate with SAS fraud-decision engines.

Your mandate is to expand today’s coverage and to drive up scale, reduce latency, and ensure always-on capabilities. You build ambitious but realistic roadmaps that enable other teams to elevate their fraud resilience, from customer onboarding, payments, and new innovative money transfers. You are intricately aware of the EQ Bank fraud and AML strategies. You lead your team to evolve the current architecture, APIs and capabilities to make it simpler and faster to reduce fraud.
You set and manage towards disciplined agile practices, predictable delivery, and operational excellence. You grow your team and encourage growth, and high performance

The Work

    • Lead the evolution of the architecture & deliver iterations of cloud‑native fraud services- maintain and evolve event‑driven microservices, high‑throughput APIs, and data pipelines that provide real‑time and near‑real‑time fraud decisions with minimal latency.
    • Turn strategy into executable roadmaps- Partner with the Product Manager to translate Enterprise Fraud and AML Strategies into quarterly objectives; lead backlog grooming, sprint planning, and release management for the POD.
    • Simplify integration patterns- Evolve and simplify APIs with the goal to lower efforts, and decrease time to deliver
    • Reduce costs- Remove duplicate technology, streamline and consolidate
    • Raise engineering standards- Implement robust branch strategy, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and infrastructure‑as‑code; champion shift‑left quality and feature‑flag safety nets.
    • Improve operational excellence- Review and lead improvements on dashboards, SLOs, runbooks; coordinate a sustainable rotation; drive post‑incident reviews that continuously shrink MTTR.
    • Advance data quality & analytics- Improve data feeds that power supervised and unsupervised models, ensuring high‑quality signals while protecting customer privacy
    • Coordinate cross‑team launches- Work closely with tech-teams to enable embedded fraud checks into onboarding journeys and new money tools.
    • Grow and develop talent- Mentor, coach, and elevate engineers; foster a culture of customer obsession, ownership, and high standards; recruit future team members as demands grow.
    • Provide L2/L3 support- Own the escalation path for fraud‑service incidents, ensuring availability targets are met and lessons learned feed back into preventive work.

Let's talk about you

    • 6+ years building and running production services, with 3+ years managing engineers in cloud-native, agile environments.
    • Track record working in cross-functional scenarios - partnering with Product, Data Science, BI, core banking domain teams, and Fraud Strategy, to deliver measurable engineering outcomes.
    • Track record designing event-driven microservices, high-throughput APIs, and data pipelines; frontend familiarity is welcome but not your core strength.
    • Hands-on experience integrating external decision- or risk-engines (fraud, credit, KYC, payments) at scale.
    • Solid command of Azure PaaS (Event Hubs, Functions, Container Apps/Kubernetes, Cosmos DB), CI/CD automation, and infrastructure-as-code.
    • Proficient in Java/Spring Boot, message streaming (Kafka/Event Hubs), and both SQL and NoSQL data stores.
    • Proven ability to establish SLOs, runbooks, and sustainable on-call rotations that shrink MTTR and eliminate “all-hands” pages.
    • Comfortable translating high-level fraud strategy into measurable OKRs, backlogs, and sprint goals - then delivering against them predictably.
    • Working knowledge fraud-loss metrics (precision, recall, false-positive rate) is a plus.
    • Effective written and verbal communication - concise narratives, clear status updates, and confident executive briefings.
    • A builder-coach mindset: you mentor engineers, foster ownership and inclusion, and recruit talent that raises the bar.
    • Nice to have: Foundational understanding of machine-learning–based fraud/AML models - able to compare vendor scoring engines with custom models, interpret lift/precision metrics, and partner with Data Science to evaluate build-vs-buy trade-offs.
