Purpose of Job

Equitable has transformed to a hybrid-agile delivery methodology with cross-functional Pods dedicated to launching new products, features, and ongoing business value for portfolios.  As part of this journey, we require a Senior Technologist who can evolve our API centric approach into an extendable and reusable Platform approach.  We think of this Associate Director, Technology Delivery role as a mash-up of a Technical Product Owner, SCRUM Master, and Conceptual Architect who can define the direction and priority for Platform delivery Pods.  Our vision is that the Associate Director, Technology Delivery and their Pods should be empowered and autonomous to drive production changes, with broader support from shared services teams such as Dev Ops & Release Management, Infrastructure & Operations, Platform Admins, and Security teams.
 
In partnership with Business Leads, Business and Technical Architects, Dev Managers, Project Managers, and API Consumers, the Associate Director, Technology Delivery will drive multiple teams to complete discovery & planning (initiation, scoping and planning), design & build Sprints, solution testing/hardening, Releases to production, and ongoing build-measure-learn releases.  This role requires product centric expertise to hypothesize on platform needs, propose conceptual solutions and validate hypotheses.  

The incumbent will ensure that the solution being delivered is cohesive and meets intended business value across the collaborative team of Bas, Developers, QA / Automated QA and external Technology partners as required. In addition to project delivery, the Associate Director, Technology Delivery and Pod team will also manage, plan and deliver backlog enhancements and fixes as ongoing releases for the aligned business portfolio. The Associate Director, Technology will provides status updates on delivery progress, velocity/trends, quality, RAID, impediments, KPIs and measurable business value and tailor the Bank’s delivery methodology to meet objectives, and ensure consistent flow of work across cross-functional Pod team members. 

The Associate Director, Technology Delivery role also includes people management responsibilities.  The Associate Director, Technology Delivery will be required to manage their Pod resources which include hiring, coaching and development of their direct reports. 

Main Activities:

    • Plan and manage the technology deliver of one or more projects/new products for multiple business stakeholders
    • Manage the Platform & API roadmap, business priorities and investment trade-offs
    • Hypothesize, test and validate platform opportunities
    • Collaborate with Sponsor, Technology Directors and Business Leads to create extendable and reusable conceptual architectures for APIs and MicroServices
    • As a Technology PO for platform APIs, ensure comprehensive security designs to manage and mitigate Cybersecurity risks
    • Partner with Core Leads to identify scope, user experiences and prioritize delivery via MVP/Release plan. Tailor delivery approach as required.
    • Create, manage and execute a platform / ecosystem strategy to increase API adoption and developer effectiveness across consumers.  Establish ongoing Governance to monitor effectiveness and business value.
    • Facilitate and contribute to Agile ceremonies, including story-point estimation, sprint grooming, retrospectives, etc.
    • Coordinate with and across shared service teams, such as Dev Ops, Infrastructure, Sec Ops, and AMS to release changes to production
    • Measure build progress, velocities, trends and quality to provide delivery status updates
    • Identify and resolve impediments / RAID
    • Drive continuous improvements within Pod teams and support overarching improvements towards the technology delivery methodology, tools and processes
    • Future people management accountabilities will include recruiting, training, coaching, and managing the performance and career of their staff

Knowledge/Skill Requirements:

    • Minimum of 10+ years in technology delivery roles such as Product Manager/Product Owner, Dev Manager, Architect, SCRUM Manager, and Consulting (Integration and/or Delivery) roles
    • Minimum of 5 years of people management experience
    • Post-secondary degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical degree or equivalent experience is required
    • 5+ years of experience in Financial Services, with deep domain knowledge in Retail and Commercial Lending, Servicing and/or Online Retail Banking
    • Experience or familiarity with Open APIs, Technical Product Management, MicroService / Enterprise Service Bus architecture, cloud IaaS / PaaS, and mobile platforms
    • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
    • Hands-on problem solving skills to remove technical impediments and manage closure of RAID
    • Ability to organize and coordinate senior resources with cross-functional skillsets as a holistic group with close collaboration and cooperation
    • Experience working in a highly collaborative and customer-centric environment 

    • Additional desirable skills include:
    • Expertise with Confluence and JIRA
    • Ability to pivot when necessary and quickly (flexibility) 
    • Product Management experience in Financial Services/ FSI 

Accountability

    • Manage and deliver a platform technology roadmap which improves reusability across business units, reduces costs of funds, and establishes new revenue streams.  Collaborate with API consumers to identify, validate and prioritize opportunities.  Establish and execute an ecosystem strategy to build API consumer awareness, developer governance, and ongoing monitoring & controls to enable a consistent and high quality API developer experience. 
    • The Associate Director, Technology Delivery will create the conceptual architecture for Platform APIs & Microservices with a goal of increasing reuse across business lines and partnerships.  As the Technical Product Owner, ensure solutions and controls reduce and mitigate cybersecurity risk and exposure.  
    • As the senior technologist across multiple Platform Pods, the Associate Director, Technology Delivery will champion sprint and release deliveries, manage daily SCRUMs, remove impediments, and drive continuous Pod improvements.
    • Failure to deliver on these accountabilities could impact Strategic Challenger Bank objectives.  Inability to successfully deliver restrict the bank’s objectives to deliver scalable and secure Technology at a faster pace.

The incumbent will be working hybrid and in office time will be spent working from Equitable Bank’s additional office space located at 351 King Street East, Toronto, ON.
