POSITION SUMMARY
The Tax Accountant reports to the Tax Manager and is responsible for assisting with the company’s tax function in coordination with outside service providers for both core REIT businesses and its non-REIT asset management responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare corporate and partnership tax returns for non-REIT managed assets
- Assist with review of Schedule K-1s for the operating partnership and non-REIT managed assets prepared by outside service providers
- Prepare REIT quarterly income and asset tests, REIT checklist, 1% impermissible tenant services test, and FIN 48 memo
- Prepare REIT earnings and profits to determine dividend treatment to be reported on Forms 1099-DIV
- Prepare quarterly taxable income projections to meet the 90% distribution requirement
- Prepare shareholder demand letters mailed each year in January
- Prepare quarterly tax provision and book related journal entries
- Assist with monitoring tax books for TRS entities
- Calculate and remit tax payments
- Track state withholding tax payments advanced by each non-REIT partnership
- Update tracker for filings and tax payments
- Assist with tax notices and inquiries from federal, state, and local tax agencies
- Assist with tax audits
- Assist with investor inquiries
- Perform research on federal, state, and local tax issues
- Assist with ad hoc projects
- Perform administrative tasks such as scanning, printing, filing, scheduling meetings, etc.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
- Accounting and tax software are utilized effectively
- Workpapers and tax returns are prepared with minimal comments
- Consistently meet deadlines
- Demonstrates eagerness to learn
- Collaborate effectively with the accounting department and other departments
REQUIRED SKILLS / ABILITIES
- 1+ year of experience in preparing tax returns, preferably with real estate and/or REIT experience
- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Access, Yardi and CCH Axcess is a plus
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to meet deadlines
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- BA/BS degree in Accounting
- Certifications such as CPA and/or MST is a plus
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times

$90,000 - $105,000 a year
Salary is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, job location, size of property where applicable, and/or certifications. In addition to your base salary, ESRT provides discretionary annual bonuses.
