Devcon Production Magician

The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Ethereum and related technologies. The EF is not a company, or even a traditional non-profit. We do not control Ethereum, nor are we the only organization that funds critical development of Ethereum-related technologies. We are part of a large ecosystem of organizations, individuals, and companies that support Ethereum. Our mission is to do what is best for Ethereum’s long-term success. Our role is to allocate resources to critical projects, to be a valued voice within the Ethereum ecosystem, and to advocate for Ethereum to the outside world.

Since 2014, EF has hosted Devcon, an annual 4-day conference which has become the oldest and most prominent event in the Ethereum community (and arguably the entire blockchain space). The event attracts developers, designers, researchers, creators, and others — many of whom are intrigued by cutting-edge technology, decentralization, privacy/security, free and open-source software, and the potential for Ethereum to change the world for the better. For a look at past Devcon editions and their speakers, see here: http://archive.devcon.org/
Devcon 7 (aka Devcon Southeast Asia) will take place this year in Bangkok between the dates of 12-15 November.

Production Magician
"A place for everything and everything in its place"

We are looking for a person who can support the Production Lead and broader Devcon team in all the actions and activities related to Devcon 7 experience and production.

As a Production Magician you’ll be handling many diverse requests that may come from our partner teams who are hosting events or from our team. We expect you to be passionate about events, attendee experience, Ethereum values, and energized by working on many different types of tasks.

This role will encompass: Supporting all aspects of event production, assisting with overseeing and managing vendors (venue, AV, translation, BTL company, catering, internet, design among others), facilitating collaboration between vendors whenever possible, having good communication, and understanding of each vendor's responsibility. Facilitating and leading some additional activities working close with the local Ethereum community might be also something required.

As the Production Magician you will need to be familiarized with the broader Devcon Team, which will be focused on all non-production aspects of the event including general operations, ticketing, website, programming, communications, sponsorships, etc.

The successful applicant will be:

Motivated

    • You feel passionate about event production — you love putting on great and original events.
    • Dedicated to delivering quality and a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to final results (each detail counts).
    • Inspired by the expectation that events hosted by EF should set the bar high for quality.
    • Able to own a task from its beginning, until it is successfully completed.
    • Willing to assist the broader team where needed on initiatives outside this main role.

Qualified

    • Experienced with organizing medium/large events (of at least 1000 people).
    • Have experience in managing event vendors as catering, internet, transport, and AV among others.
    • Effective while working under pressure with hard deadlines and unknown issues that are ever-present in event planning.
    • Proactively troubleshoot problems blocking your path, and the problems blocking the paths of others.
    • Have great people and communication skills
    • Have an ownership mentality. When you take on a task, you get it done well and on time.
    • Fluent in English and Thai (writing and speaking).
    • Based in Bangkok (preferable), or South East Asia, or willing to be in Bangkok for 2 months prior to Devcon.
    • Huge plus: experience running big events in developing countries.
    • Able to work with a multicultural team.

Available

    • Exact time commitment plan can be discussed, but we estimate this role will require part-time (20hrs/week) starting in Mid-April 2024, increasing to full-time in July 2024 until Devcon in November 2024.
    • Being prepared to work long nights/weekends if necessary, especially leading up to and during the event.
    • This will be a contractor-style role where you will be able to bill based on the number of hours you work, which may vary month-to-month.
    • Able to meet and respond to messages at varying hours of the day to accommodate a globally-located, remote team across time zones (largely based in the Americas and European time zones).
    • Have a valid passport and able to travel to Bangkok, Thailand November 7 - November 19, 2024.

After 1 month in this position…

    • You understand most of the production needs from our partner teams who are hosting events in Devcon.
    • You are familiarized with vendors and suppliers.
    • You are familiarized with Devcon in general and the specific production timeline.
    • You have adopted all project management and communication tools our team uses (Notion, Telegram, Discord, Google Docs, etc).
    • You have developed a solid relationship with the whole Devcon team and partners you will be assisting, have an understanding of the various initiatives within the Devcon team, and are ready to help out wherever your help may be needed.

Notes:

    • Our team and this position are fully remote, with the exception of the event in Bangkok, Thailand November 7 - November 19, 2024.
    • Flexibility in scheduling is crucial, as there may be early morning or late evening meetings.
    • This role is temporary and does not pertain to future events. Your mission is strictly for the planning and execution of Devcon 7 in Bangkok, Thailand.
We're rooting for you! Please use your cover letter to convince us why you're the best match for the Production Magician role!
