Head of AI Research

We're seeking a visionary Head of AI Research to lead our next-generation search intelligence initiative and define the future of knowledge discovery. This role involves architecting breakthrough AI systems that can understand, reason over, and synthesize information at web scale, while building and leading a world-class research team. You'll be responsible for pushing the boundaries of what's possible in neural information retrieval, from conceptualizing novel architectures to deploying production systems that serve millions of queries.

We're an SF team of ~30 engineers/researchers from Harvard, MIT, Apple, etc. We recently raised a $17m Series A from Lightspeed and Nvidia, and we just bought a $5m H200 cluster to train more models.

At Exa, we're training foundational models for search. Our goal is to build systems that can instantly filter the world's knowledge to exactly what you want, no matter how complex your query. Basically, put the web into an extremely powerful database.
No other search engine can -- or is even trying -- to do this (SearchGPT, Google, Perplexity are innovating on the UI, not the search algorithm). And no other AI lab we know of is exploring this direction at web-scale.
That means if we don't find novel methods for search, they won't be found. Our team has already made breakthroughs not seen in the literature, and we have more coming. Want to explore the search frontier with us?

Desired Experience

    • PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field with 8+ years of AI research experience
    • Track record of breakthrough research in neural information retrieval, natural language processing, or related areas
    • Experience leading research teams of 10+ people in industry or academia
    • Deep expertise in transformer architectures, large-scale distributed training, and neural search systems
    • Proven ability to ship research-driven products that impact millions of users
    • Strong publication record at top-tier AI conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, SIGIR)

Key Responsibility

    • Research Leadership Define AI search research roadmap. Lead breakthrough research in neural information retrieval, multimodal understanding, and reasoning systems. Publish at top venues while shipping practical systems.
    • Technical Innovation Design web-scale AI systems. Develop novel architectures combining retrieval and reasoning. Architect distributed training for 100B+ parameter models. Ensure systems can scale to handle billions of queries while maintaining sub-second response times.
    • Team Management Build and lead 15-25 world-class AI researchers. Recruit top talent from leading labs. Create ambitious research culture with practical execution.
