We are looking for a Principal Mechanical Engineer to be responsible for the mechanical design of the core reactor in Form Energy’s long-duration energy storage system. This role will focus on converting a conceptual design into a detailed mechanical design with emphasis on design for manufacture and assembly. The candidate must have deep experience in mechanical design for production and a high-level of comfort working in multi-disciplinary technical teams. The ideal candidate will have prior experience taking a product from conceptual design to high volume manufacturing. The ideal candidate will also exhibit an ability to creatively solve mechanical design challenges and subsequently impart rigorous design processes to ensure product success. Further, this role will support other early-stage prototyping efforts across the company.

What You'll Do

    • Drive the reactor design from conceptual design stage to high volume manufacturing readiness:
    • Interface with contract and toll manufacturers to iterate on mechanical component design of Form Energy’s reactor design
    • Develop functional mechanical requirements for the reactor in collaboration with chemists, materials scientists, chemical engineers, system engineers, and application experts
    • Propose new and modified reactor designs that achieve functional requirements while meeting stringent cost targets
    • Collaborate with scientists and engineers to inform revisions to the reactor design
    • Integrate Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA) into our product development effort
    • Lead Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) for the reactor, incorporating feedback from the entire technical development team
    • Develop and maintain cost models to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the reactor design at large scale production volumes
    • Support the design, build, and test of engineering prototypes
    • Collaborate with other engineering teams at Form Energy to define and execute test and validation plans in an effort to advance product development
    • Evaluate prototype performance and inform design revisions using data-driven decision making
    • Build and manage long-lasting, reliable relationships with external vendors and contractors
    • Aid in sourcing capital equipment that aid in reactor design, fabrication, and testing
    • Aid in developing Form Energy’s facilities to meet the company’s growing needs

What We're Looking For

    • BS required in Mechanical Engineering or similar field
    • 10+ years of industry experience in mechanical design or manufacturing
    • Direct experience taking a mechanical design through the product development process, beginning with a conceptual design to a manufactured product  
    • Direct experience managing the release of components and assemblies to external contract and toll manufacturers
    • Experience with Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
    • Experience with design for manufacturing and assembly principles (DFMA)
    • Expert in computer aided design (CAD) across multiple software packages
    • Expert in geometric tolerancing and dimensioning (GD&T)
    • Experience engineering mechanical systems for complex integrated systems (i.e., engines, turbines, reactors, motors, turbomachinery, refineries) is a plus
    • Machining, fabrication, and welding experience a plus
