Infrastructure Architect

FreeBalance is the global provider of integrated Public Financial Management (PFM) reform and Government Resource Planning (GRP) technology solutions.
As part of our global expansion programme, we are looking for an Infrastructure Architect based in South Africa but working globally. FreeBalance works with a partner network to deliver infrastructure solutions required by customers.
The ideal candidate will be a strong leader and communicator. A successful Infrastructure Architect is good at solving problems and thinking creatively.
The Infrastructure Architect reports to the Vice President, Alliances and Knowledge Management.

Main Responsibilities:

    •   Analysing RFPs (Request for Proposal)/ EOIs (Expression of Interest) / ToRs (Terms of Reference) to assess the optimal infrastructure required to meet the specification
    • Provision of the complete infrastructure design for all components required including but not limited to servers, storage, network, backup and DR
    • Provision of questions to the issuer of the RFP/ EOI/ ToR for clarification on matters which pertain to IT infrastructure
    • Drawing up an appropriate Bill of Materials (BOM) or Scope of Work after discussion with the relevant teams in FreeBalance, such as R&D or Services
    • Obtain budgetary estimates for the BOM for benchmarking purposes for partners
    • Management of the responses from the partner
    • Submission of all responses for IT components to the FreeBalance Bid Team
    • Ensure partner submissions are managed, recorded and can be audited for compliance purposes after the bid is submitted


    • English writing & comprehension skills (mandatory)
    • Deep experience in designing network infrastructure solutions
    • Experience with web technologies and building enterprise architecture road maps
    • Experience designing, integrating, and managing complex infrastructure solutions
    • Knowledge of client-server networking and database management
    • Ability to provide technical system solutions, determine overall design direction and provide hardware recommendations for complex technical issues
    • Solid understanding of Statements of Work, Structural design principles
    • Knowledge of Network architectures and Virtualization Technologies
    • Experience planning and developing support processes and adhering to best practices
    • Strong written and oral communication skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with technical and non-technical audiences
    • Ability to quickly comprehend the functions and capabilities of new technologies
    • Ability to operate in a fast-paced, evolving environment and appropriately prioritize tasks, and keep abreast of the latest technology.
    • Capability to work with diverse teams in different time zones.


    • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology or related field. Candidates with master’s possess an advantage.
    • 10+ years’ experience in a production IT environment managing enterprise IT infrastructure, hardware, hosting service and network areas.
    • Ability to write architectural design documents or review design documents provided by others.
    • Knowledge and understanding of industry trends and new technologies and ability to apply trends to architectural needs.
    • Web server and application server administration and web applications deployment experience
    • Architecture Certification (TOGAF, CITA, EACOE, Certified SOA Architect, etc.)
    • Knowledge of Cisco network and technologies, CCNA(P), CCIE, Linux and Unix
    • Proficient in ITIL strategy, network security, Network Components, Active Directory and protocols.
    • Thorough knowledge of the Windows concepts, Domains, Active Directory and its concepts, and the interaction between hardware, operating systems, network, data center, and application software, Linux and Unix
    • Strong working knowledge of VMware or other virtual software.
    • Deep understanding of TCP-IP and other network protocols.
    • Familiarity with DNS, DHCP and other network services.
