EOI: Critical Number

Our mission is to steer transformative technology towards benefiting life and away from extreme large-scale risks. We think a crucial step in achieving this mission is to have trusted coordination mechanisms available to people. Currently, we believe the coordination technology possible exceeds the existence and availability of this technology. We want to correct this.
While we’re exploring other ideas, the specific tech direction we’d potentially like to sponsor we’re calling Critical Number: a threshold signature revealing platform (with the possibility of having a credible commitment component.) We expect this to be particularly useful for combatting first actor risk in whistleblowing scenarios.
We need to build this tech and then get it in the hands of people who could do good with it, and ensure it is worthy of their trust.
This involves:
-Finding out where the technology should be deployed and working with stakeholders to deploy it.
-Iterating on the design and features of the technology to better solve similar problems in the future.
We’d like to empower someone to find and offer this type of coordination where it will benefit the world.
We’re looking for someone who wants to take on the challenge of overseeing both building the technology and trust in this technology. We believe these go hand in hand.
We expect people who would be exceptional at this have:
-A large personal and professional network and their ear to the ground on what is happening in the world
-Experience coordinating people (e.g. a former union organizer)
-Good taste in UI and UX
-Enough technical understanding to appreciate and maintain high security standards
-A desire to solve problems with coordination and iterate as needed
If you think this might be you, please submit an EOI*.
*FLF is exploring this space, but it has not committed to starting an organization of this type nor filling this role. We are open to the idea that another set of qualities or experiences we have not thought about might be a good fit, so we encourage you to express your interest if you have any - even if it is not obvious you would be right for the task. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to respond to most submissions, and we plan to concentrate our focus on only the most promising candidates. We’re not treating this like a job ad. If you have not heard back from us in 2 weeks, please assume we will not be reaching out.
