Position Overview: The Director of Analytical Chemistry will oversee the analytical team and systems that support new protein ingredient ideation, feasibility, development, and manufacturing QA.  The Analytical Chemistry division enables the advancement of our technology platform from strain engineering, through fermentation, protein ingredient recovery and final product formulation.  It supports lab scale through pilot scale activities within our facility and interfaces with tech transfer to industrial scale manufacturing of protein ingredients.  Principal analytical targets include proteins that originate in animals but are produced through our proprietary animal-free technology. 

Key Responsibilities

    • Provide leadership and direction to the Analytical Chemistry program within the area of Research & Development.  
    • Integrate analysis schedules, turnaround times and throughput with the data requirements that are necessary to support new product and process development.  
    • Align organizational objectives with departmental strategy; translate strategy into effective short- and long-range planning including project, staffing, development, and scientific initiatives. 
    • Manage and mentor team of scientists including responsibility for professional and scientific growth and development.  
    • Monitor project and program costs and performance, including evaluation of progress, completion, and resource needs. 
    • Support a culture of learning and development by providing feedback, evaluation, and clear direction that encourages autonomy and drives performance. 
    • Serve as key representative and spokesperson for the department, representing the Analytical Chemistry program to a wide range of audiences including internal and external stakeholders.  
    • Collaborate in partnership with other departments, teams, and leaders on cross-functional projects and objectives.  
    • Evaluate and submit proposals for acquisition and implementation of cutting-edge analytical techniques to meet the needs of R&D in developing its protein ingredients.  
    • Identify and manage appropriate Contract Research Organizations to provide data requested for assays not performed in-house. 
    • Support manufacturing QA/QC as requested, ensuring that criteria, application and decision making are aligned with standards defined by Quality team. 
    • Maintain a department-wide program for documentation (laboratory SOPs and records) To ensure consistent application of methods, ability to monitor method development, and communication of best practices across the organization  
    • Review and evaluate analytical data, write reports, and ensure compliance with methods, procedures, and standards is maintained.  
    • Contribute to patent applications 

Knowledge, Experience, and Skills

    •  In-depth knowledge of protein chemistry  
    • Comprehensive knowledge of analytical techniques for proteins, peptides, amino acids, their separation and characterization including RP-HPLC, SEC-HPLC, SDS-PAGE, IEC-HPLC, LC-MS/MS 
    •  Hands on experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry troubleshooting.  
    • Experience with Mass Hunter, ChemStation or various other quantitative analysis software packages highly preferred. 
    • Demonstrated experience conducting successful method transfer to Contract Manufacturing Organizations 
    • Strong business acumen with the ability to connect organizational objectives to departmental, team, or individual initiatives. 
    • Ability to multi-task in an extremely dynamic environment while providing high-quality analytical support in a professional manner.  
    • Adaptable communication skills to interact with internal and external stakeholders of every level of the organization. Executive presentation skills and the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.  
    • Collaborative approach to problem-solving, staff development, and achieving cross-functional team objectives.   
    • Proven success in building and leading high-performing, diverse, and inclusive teams, including goal-setting, performance coaching, and professional career development. 

Required Qualifications

    • Education: PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Natural Products Chemistry, or related field. 
    • Experience: Comprehensive post-doctorate experience in an industrial analytical chemistry environment with a demonstrated record of increased responsibility. Experience leading and managing a team of scientists, including ownership of team outcomes and objectives with responsibility for the growth and development of subordinate staff.
