Position Summary

Genome Medical is searching for a Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) who is a motivated individual with a background in genetics, biology, psychology, or similar fields. The GCA must be interested in learning from genetic counselors on how to improve patient care while supporting them in telehealth consultations. The GCA should have a willingness to learn new material in the area of genetics/genetic counseling, as well as flexibility to handle time-sensitive tasks as they arise. The individual in this role will work closely with other members of the Genetic Counseling Assistant Team. In addition, the GCA will look to ensure outstanding provider interactions and patient care by partnering with Genetic Counselors and GC Team leads.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Duties:

    • Prepare genetic counseling summary reports for appointments and collect necessary consultation documents.
    • Contact patients prior to appointments to collect personal and/or family history.
    • Work with the genetic counseling team to manage prior authorization cases.
    • Review appointment slots to ensure they are scheduled appropriately (i.e. session length, appointment type, specialty chosen, etc.).
    • Attend informational meetings as needed to learn new material.
    • Escalate cases and triage to other departments when appropriate.
    • Ensure HIPAA compliance in all interactions and provide individualized service via phone, chat, or email.
    • Support the patient care process from referral to return of results, prioritizing urgent vs. routine visits.
    • Facilitate external medical referrals and follow-up care when needed.
    • Consistently meet efficiency and productivity metrics.
    • Identify areas for process and efficiency improvements.
    • Facilitate communication between patients and the genetic counseling team regarding visit or testing status.
    • Provide customer and partner support for individuals navigating Genome Medical services, maintaining positive rapport and resolving inquiries to meet quality and satisfaction standards. 
    • Understands Genome Medical services, digital tools, products and processes to effectively represent them to patients and partners.
    • Act as a liaison between outside physicians, GMI care providers, clients, and partners.
    • Assist with pedigree generation, patient summary notes, and action plans, ensuring timely delivery to patients and outside providers.
    • Prepare patient records for review by medical specialists and collaborate with the care team to implement appropriate care plans.

    • Build knowledge of lab selection and assist with lab order entry and sample collection.
    • Prepare required patient records for labs or third-party insurers, performing pre-authorizations.
    • Track and route test results to care providers, answering patient questions throughout the process.
    • Additional responsibilities as they relate to the position and needs of the department.
$40,560 - $45,000 a year

Hours: 40 hours per week with flexibility for some weekend coverage.
Time during the week will be adjusted so that the total does not exceed 40 hours per week.

Hours available are 12-8 pm EDT/9-5 PDT

Requirements and Qualifications:

Associates degree in genetics, biology, psychology, or related fields required and/or 2 years of experience in genetic counseling support or other clinical work. Bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Understanding of the specifications of a HIPAA compliant environment to be able to deliver quality care as a customer advocate is preferable. 

Strong organizational skills in order to facilitate information, meet set expectations and execute accurate completion of all required procedures.

Quick learner who is comfortable working in a dynamic role and open to continuous growth and evolution of responsibilities.

Strong interpersonal skills that will be showcased in a team-based, remote environment.

Excellent communication (verbal, written and listening) skills and able to collaboratively engage with all customers, patients, and teammates.  

Proficiency in various applications such as Google Suite, Zoom and Pedigree drawing software and able to work across multiple technology platforms at the same time.

Preferred Qualifications:

Ability to speak additional languages is beneficial, but not required.
