Genomics plc is a pioneering health technology company focused on enhancing every step of the patient pathway, particularly for those common diseases that affect most people and take up most of our precious healthcare resources. Our tools and systems, powered by genomics, improve every step of the patient pathway, from disease prevention to screening, diagnosis, treatment, and even the development of new medicines. Our vision is that, in time, everyone will benefit from our genomic technology, helping individuals and entire populations to live longer, healthier lives.  Our culture is honest and transparent.  We have big plans and are looking for people to join us and make a real impact. You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse, energetic, and smart bunch of people throughout the company.

What you’ll be doing

We are seeking an exceptional Scientific Developer with strong computational skills and experience in applying these skills in the context of large-scale data science. While experience in human genetics is preferred, applicants with backgrounds in other quantitative fields and an enthusiasm for the potential of genetics to revolutionise healthcare are encouraged to apply. You will work as part of a small team of experts in human genetics, data science and software engineering that build the platform at the core of our work in Therapeutics to derive new insights into human biology and help guide drug development towards safer and more efficacious drug targets. Your involvement in the various stages of development (methodology, software engineering, analysis) will reflect your personal balance of computational and scientific proficiencies.

Given the sensitive nature of data used in Genomics plc you will be expected to accept and understand your duty to keep data secure, supporting the information security program based on the ISO/IEC ISO 27001 standard.

    • To contribute towards and implement algorithms developed within our Therapeutics teams to a high standard with respect to robustness, testing, and performance.
    • To conduct high-quality analyses of large-scale biological datasets using existing or bespoke tools and share their results with scientists and other stakeholders.
    • To contribute to presentations and publications (both internal and external) arising from our work.
    • To maintain up-to-date knowledge about innovation and good practices in genomics, data science, and scientific computing.

Essential Requirements

    • A strong quantitative background in a scientific field.
    • The ability to discuss and explain complex ideas to both specialists and non-specialists.
    • Competency in writing high-quality code in Python using modern software development practices.
    • Competency in analysing and learning from large-scale data sets in a scientific context. Experience running tools and workflows in a Linux-based environment with eg. bash, slurm.

Preferred Requirements

    • PhD/post-graduate degree in a scientific field, ideally genomics/bioinformatics/computational biology.
    • Competence and familiarity with statistics and machine learning.
    • Experience working on a collaborative codebase using version control and CI/CD.
    • Experience with common bioinformatics and genomics tools and file formats.
    • Experience with designing and running large-scale workflows using eg. WDL, CWL.
    • Experience creating and working with containers, eg. Docker, singularity.
