Geotab is seeking a Patent Attorney who will contribute to the day-to-day workload in the areas of patent procurement, as well as proactive avoidance of adverse patent situations. What you'll do:

As a Patent Attorney your key area of responsibility will be to will be supporting the development of Geotab's patent portfolio, with a focus and Data and Analytics patents. You will need to work closely with Geotab’s Engineering Department to identify and prioritize invention opportunities.

To be successful in this role you will be a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, and have the ability to quickly understand complex, technical concepts. In addition, the successful candidate will have strong logical and project management skills with an ability to identify needs, develop effective solutions, and manage projects through completion. The successful candidate will also be able to manage multiple timelines and contrasting priorities to ensure timely results.

How you'll make an impact:

    • Manage a patent portfolio to draft, file and prosecution patent applications for your jurisdiction.
    • Work closely as an associate of other patent professionals in other jurisdictions.
    • Provide strategic guidance on patent matters, including assessing patentability, drafting and prosecuting patent applications, and managing patent portfolios.
    • Monitor competitor activities and industry trends to identify opportunities and risks, and offer patent litigation support if required.
    • Identify inventions, preparing and filing patent applications, managing the prosecution process with patent offices, and maintaining developing and updating the portfolio over time.
    • Collaborating with technical team members to create invention opportunities that translate into patent applications.
    • Staying current with development in jurisdiction patent law and regulations, and provide guidance and training to internal team members as required.
    • Represent Geotab in patent proceedings before the EPO to include oral hearings, oppositions, etc.

What you'll bring to this role:

    • At least a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field (engineering, computer science, data science, etc.).
    • 3-5 years experience working as a patent attorney. 
    • Extensive experience in European patent prosecution, including drafting patent applications, responding to office actions, and handling opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO.
    • Strong knowledge of patent law and regulations specific to the portfolio jurisdiction (European Patent Convention (EPC) and the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)).
    • Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to communicate complex technical and intellectual property concepts effectively.
    • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
    • Experience working in a multinational corporation or law firm with a focus on technology related industries.
    • Fluency in English is required, and proficiency in other European languages is a plus.
    • Experience working with technical product suite including machine learning (AI), hardware, firmware, software, database, and automotive components.
    • Develop thorough technical understanding of Geotab's end-to-end telematics platform.
    • Comfortable working in an agile drafting environment.
    • Experience interacting with senior executives with an ability to influence key stakeholders.
    • A well-defined sense of diplomacy, including solid negotiation, conflict resolution and relationship management skills.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
    • Strong interpersonal relationship building skills.
    • Highly organized and able to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
    • A strong team player with the ability to engage with all levels of the organization.
    • Technical competence using software programs, including, but not limited to, Google Suite for business (Sheets, Docs, Slides).
    • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfortable in a flat organization.
