Built is a growth-stage FinTech company that is on a mission to change the way the world gets built with technology and services that streamline the $1.2T U.S. construction finance market. We strive to empower lenders, owners/borrowers, builders, inspectors, and more with innovative technologies that enable participants to manage risk, maximize productivity and improve the experience of accessing and managing construction capital. Since 2017, we have doubled in size and tripled our client base. In 2019, we completed a Series B financing round of $35 million led by Goldman Sachs Investment Partners bringing our total funding to $59 million.  Our rapid growth gives us the opportunity to invest in team expansion and development.  

As part of this growth, Built is looking for its first In-House Corporate Counsel to play a vital role in laying the foundation for smart growth. We are looking for a business mind, with legal expertise. You will create scalable contracts and contract processes that support strong partnerships with financial institutions, other clients and vendors. You will help build out corporate infrastructure and advise on strategic direction from a legal lens. You will work with leadership to drive growth and solve tough challenges. We don’t expect you to know every area of law, but we expect you to be great at figuring out what we need to know and who to look to for additional counsel if needed.

Job Description: What you will do

    • Strategic and Corporate Advisory:
    • Have a key voice in strategic decision by advising the leadership team on decisions impacting company direction and growth
    • Be a thought leader on security, compliance and other legal implications of business decisions
    • Lead evolution of corporate structure (e.g. subsidiaries)
    • Be a legal leader in fundraising and treasury management
    • Contracting:
    • Work closely with Built’s sales and business teams to provide legal and strategic business advice across current and future client relationships
    • Review, edit, draft, negotiate and update new and existing client contracts including MSA's, SaaS agreements, security, service level terms, partnership agreements, data vendor agreements, NDAs, and more
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design contract negotiation and approval processes for clients and vendors
    • Regulation and Compliance:
    • Take the lead on ensuring that Built has the expertise (financial, banking, security, privacy) to enter new markets in the US and internationally 
    • Human Resources:
    • Maintain and ensure compliance with HR-related legal policies related to recruitment, compensation, retention, and performance management
    • Develop efficient and creative solutions for growing our global entity and organizational structure
    • Manage Outside Counsel:
    • Determine when to source key partners, outside counsel or resources to supplement internal knowledge 
    • Manage budget for outside advisory 

Skills: What you will bring to the role

    • 4+ years of corporate law experience focused on helping the business(es) manage client-facing contracts
    • Familiarity with master agreements, SaaS contracts and enterprise sales processes
    • Ability to collaboratively work across legal and business functions
    • Self-directed with a passion for creatively solving problems while demonstrating initiative and flexibility
    • Exceptional written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
    • Admitted to a US State bar and willing to register as in-house counsel with the Tennessee Bar Association within 6 months of hire 
    • Experience with the following preferred but not required:
    • Experience contracting with Banks, Asset Managers and Insurance Companies or other highly regulated industries
    • Experience working with GDPR and PIPEDA privacy requirements
    • Advising and supporting a sales organization with a client-centric and friendly approach to negotiating deals
    • Working in-house with multiple cross-functional stakeholders
