Global Health Corps (GHC) mobilizes a global community of emerging leaders to build the movement for health equity. GHC believes young leaders with diverse backgrounds and a deep commitment to collaboration, innovation, and social justice are going to revolutionize how the world tackles its toughest health challenges. We strongly believe our GHC community is the new breed of leaders that the world desperately needs.
Through a competitive recruitment process, we identify daring and innovative university graduates and early- to mid-career professionals from around the world and pair them with amazing partner organizations and government agencies in the US, East Africa, and Southern Africa. Our fellows spend a year in their placement devoting their unstoppable energy to making the world a healthier place for all people, everywhere. Whether they are working with a small grassroots organization like HIPS in Washington, DC to ensure sex workers have access to critical health services, or with the Ministry of Health in Zambia researching patient use of HIV testing and counseling, each fellow plays an essential role in the health equity movement.
Fellows come together five times a year for additional training, community building, leadership development, and mentorship to become audacious, resilient, and highly-networked changemakers. Each one of our community members has the capacity to change the world – and many already are – and we are grateful to work closely with them to amplify their impact. Since its founding in 2009, GHC has supported nearly 800 fellows working at various levels of the health system, across issue areas and across continents, and our community gets stronger every year. GHC is committed to investing in the long term leadership and professional growth of our community members so that this powerful network can be a catalyst for change in global health.
GHC is building out a vibrant program beyond the fellowship year to support our global community of changemakers. Using a variety of learning formats and approaches, our goal is to create alumni programming that provides opportunities for professional and personal growth as well as collectively creating impact as a community. This includes hosting regional leadership summits, offering career advising and mentorship, and identifying prominent media and conference opportunities for members to participate in. As with the rest of our program and organization, the alumni program is created in close partnership with our alumni community, reflecting their needs and feedback.
GHC’s training approach integrates leadership and professional development with self-reflection and personal learning. Based on a core set of leadership practices, we focus on building skills that are essential for effective and ethical leadership, such as human-centered design thinking, storytelling, systems thinking and strategic planning for social change. We foster attitudes like empathy, resilience and cultural humility.
GHC is seeking a passionate and organized leader to join our growing global team. The past eight years have been full of exciting and rapid growth for GHC and we are in need of a Director of Professional Development (DOPD) to further build out our alumni program offerings to meet the professional and leadership needs of our 800+ global community members. The Director of Professional Development will report directly to the Senior Vice President of Programs and manage the Alumni Program team, which includes the Alumni Program Manager and Alumni Program Coordinator. The goal of this position is to design and deliver programs that address the professional development needs of GHC alumni and fellows at various points along their career path, cultivating innovative, collaborative and systems-thinking skills and practices needed to make real change in global health. It will also be important to foster connections within and between fellowship classes as well as the broader global health community and maintain a strong connection between GHC and alumni. While the majority of the work will be focused on post-fellowship programming, there will also be important collaboration with the Director of Programs to ensure a strong foundation of professional development content for fellows during their inaugural year.

Alumni Program Strategy and Management
- Oversee and continue to design and build out the post-fellowship leadership programming, focusing on the skills and experiences required to train and mobilize the next generation of global health leaders
- Utilize engaging, dynamic adult education learning that incorporates best practice leadership and professional development approaches
- Manage Alumni Program team on a day-to-day basis as well as coordinate across departments and countries to ensure organizational integration and implementation of alumni programming
- Function in a collaborative fashion, incorporating input and feedback from community members and GHC staff in program design
- Further establish the infrastructure, systems and processes needed to build a strong alumni program
Professional Development and Career Support
- Oversee existing professional development programming, including: Community Mentorship Program, Advisor Program, Career Advising, etc.
- Identify additional professional development needs and opportunities for the post-fellowship community; design programming in collaboration with various teams that promotes the cultivation of key professional and management competencies and skills
- Explore and build relationships with individuals, organizations, and institutions that can expand GHC’s professional development offerings and support
- Identify opportunities to promote networking opportunities for members of the GHC community and other professionals and leaders working in global health and related fields (e.g. mixers for large groups and small group gatherings)
- Develop system and materials for career advising for members of the post-fellowship community and fellows.
- Work in coordination with Director of Programs to ensure alignment of fellowship leadership journey with programming post-fellowship
- Support fellowship programming specifically through a professional development lens to ensure that fellows receive foundational learnings through the year; can include regular communications and workshop session design
- Work with Alumni Program team and Country Teams to strengthen the GHC network globally, regionally and locally.
- Manage the program design and execution of large-scale conferences and events including GHC Leadership Summits in the US, East Africa, and Southern Africa
- Responsibilities include: creating leadership programming; external communications with GHC community; coordinating with Country Teams for logistics and event planning, and creating plans and materials for all events
- Develop and implement ideas that further build GHC relationships across sectors, geographies and fellowship classes
- Oversee global coordination among 12+ alumni chapters across GHC’s six countries of operation
- Facilitate sharing and exchanging of best practices and experiences of alumni in other countries
- Determine and design templates or other tools to support alumni chapter activities, ie budget templates, tracking documents, etc.
- Coordinate the expansion of alumni chapters to new cities and countries, supporting the growth and development of the alumni network and various country activities
- Manage Alumni Program budget; serve as support to Country Team for Leadership Summit and Alumni Chapter budgets
Assessment and Data Analysis
- Coordinate with the Senior Vice President of Programs and Impact and Learning Manager to set goals and metrics for alumni program and continuously evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the program
- Iterate on alumni programming and be flexible to changing needs based on assessment results
- Minimum 10 years work experience required
- Global Experience required
- Strong project management skills; proven ability to supervise multiple projects and priorities with ease
- Knowledgeable and passionate about leadership development and community building
- An innovative and adaptable executer; ability to strengthen existing programs and architect and implement new ones
- Experience managing and coordinating a team
- Cross-cultural competency; experience working in another country or in a cross-cultural environment
- Experience with event planning and/or program logistics management
- Versatile writer, capable of written communications ranging from strategy documents to broader community pieces
- Compassionate listener; genuine interest in the personal narratives and development of young leaders
- Willingness to travel to (~4-5 times per year for retreats, trainings, and leadership summits, including travel to Eastern and Southern Africa)
- Commitment to health and social justice issues
- Understanding of global health and development landscape preferred
- Coaching or mentoring experience preferred
