The Developer Marketing team works hard to give GitHub users a reason to be fans. We try to build relationships across the software community and inspire new developers to start building something great. We are deeply invested in the people who use GitHub, and we’re looking for a talented writer to help us give back.
From weekend hobbies to code that goes to space, the GitHub community is rich in inspiration. We just need someone to be its voice. You’re passionate about stories and you’ve got excellent writing chops—from articles and blog posts to punchy social media copy. You have ideas for content series and social campaigns and the drive to make them happen.
- Ideate and craft
- Work with other Hubbers to discover stories that matter to our audience.
- Contribute to our voice and style guides and help define how GitHub speaks.
- Write blog posts, guides, landing page copy, and other articles to support the Developer Marketing Team.
- Build content and series around events, product launches, and emerging themes within the community.
- Source and edit
- Work closely with teams to coordinate editorial, illustration, and video activations.
- Coordinate the creation of platform-specific content with our art, product, and event teams, including text, photo, video, and illustration.
- Identify the most compelling visuals and copy to accompany content and package those for sharing.
- Based on trends and timing, identify evergreen content opportunities and reactivate them with our audiences.
- Publish and share
- Publish editorial and visual assets for GitHub social channels.
- Coordinate the content programming schedule to optimise content performance across our channels.
- Measure and learn
- Work with our Marketing Operations team to measure content success.
- Deliver a monthly summary of the results of your efforts.
- Learn from your findings and adjust your strategies based on data.
- Build and document
- Help maintain a cross-team editorial calendar.
- Create and socialize an internal editorial style guide.

- A way with words. You love the power of the written word, you derive immense satisfaction from perfecting a sentence, and you’re motivated to teach others how to write clearly and persuasively.
- Audience empathy. You’re skilled in seeing other perspectives and responding empathetically. You innately understand the audience’s perspective, can clearly represent that perspective in your strategy, and apply those skills in crafting content that lands with targeted audiences.
- Smart with technology and the web. You know a few tips and tricks when collaborating online.
- Master of feedback. You’re always trying to be a better writer. You crave constructive criticism, and you’re committed to finding ways to produce the best results possible.
- Decision maker. You can confidently make and explain a decision. You naturally seek solutions and can deftly moderate conversations about writing.
- Voracious curiosity. You ask a ton of questions and often stumble upon stories when you do. You follow leads in pursuit of interesting people, impactful projects, and great ideas.
- You must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
- Your background is in journalism, creative nonfiction, or content marketing for organizations with large and diverse communities. You should also be interested in tech writing and have an enthusiasm for STEM topics and the open source community.
BONUS 👍 IF YOU HAVE:
- 3+ years of professional experience in writing and/or editorial, whether in creative nonfiction, journalism, publishing, content marketing, or other areas
- Experience collaborating with designers on visual storytelling
- Experience with freelance work, remote communications, or working on highly distributed teams
- Experience working in an engineering/developer-centric culture
- Experience using GitHub or with the open source community
