About the Role

Selling absurdly fresh groceries is one of the most important things we do at Good Eggs! We are hiring a Purchasing & Category Manager - Grocery to be the main point of contact for producers and vendors in the dairy, meals, pantry, frozen, and wellness categories. You will be responsible for keeping our warehouse filled with the highest quality products available. You will also focus on continuously identifying and determining optimum sources of fresh grocery supply.  

Duties & Responsibilities

    • Set up and manage supply agreements with suppliers
    • Analyze internal and external data to develop category strategy aligned with industry and consumer trends
    • Manage onboarding and offboarding of products within time-bound category review schedule in accordance with sourcing standards
    • Negotiate costs, distribution, and delivery terms with suppliers and execute pricing strategy to meet margin targets for assigned categories
    • Examine competition to determine trends and pricing bandwidth
    • Work with Buyers and Merchandisers to implement successful exit strategies for stagnant items from inventory
    • Coach, develop, and directly supervise team members to support overall Category Management Team functions
    • Act as category subject matter expert to educate and galvanize the rest of the organization around the assigned category
    • Work cross-functionally with other buyers, category managers merchandising team, and marketing team on promotional, pricing, merchandising, and marketing strategy
    • Successfully identify new product and category opportunities
    • Navigate key metrics by category and SKU to analyze assortment and potential gaps
    • Set and monitor pricing to ensure that financial and departmental targets are met and that Good Eggs pricing is competitive and a good value to customers
    • Continually optimize supply for quality and COGS, negotiating market and seasonal pricing with suppliers
    • Build strong and collaborative relationships with producers in assigned categories or commodities through developing and sharing short-term and long-term forecasts and leading supplier business reviews and quarterly and yearly vendor scorecards
    • Own accuracy of gross margin, PO and COGs data, and invoice reconciliation
    • Keep Days On Hand (DOH) to target goals by storage zone and category
    • Coordinate creation and launch of new items, in-season items, and web stands with merchandising and marketing teams
    • Accountable for working with Operations to control spoilage and shrink
    • Work cross-functionally with demand planning to ensure accurate inventory and supply for the entire fresh grocery category, this includes: dairy, cheese, bakery, perishable beverages, ready-to-eat meals, and alcohol
    • Interpret projections from the S&OP team to ensure adequate supply to fulfill demand in multiple warehouses

Qualifications

    • 5+ years of relevant grocery industry work experience, either on farms or, preferably, in fresh grocery retail/distribution purchasing
    • 2+ years experience in category management/procurement / purchasing, preferably in the fresh grocery industry
    • 2+ years experience as a people leader
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills 
    • Strong negotiation skills
    • Strong business and financial acumen
    • Outstanding communication and time management skills
    • Knowledge of quality standards and industry certifications
    • Experience managing relationships with outside vendors
    • Experience with e-commerce a plus
    • Knowledge of basic food safety and handling practices
    • Understanding of margins and profitability
    • Proficiency in Google and MS Office suite software (i.e. spreadsheets, presentations, and word processing software)
    • Ability to understand and engage with new tools
    • Strong team player
    • Ability to travel
$85,000 - $100,000 a year
