Gravis Robotics is a startup that turns heavy construction machines into intelligent and autonomous robots. Our unique combination of learning-based automation and augmented remote control lets one operator safely conduct a fleet of earthmoving machines in a gamified environment. Our team has over a decade of academic experience honing the cutting edge of large-scale robotics, and is rapidly growing to bring that expertise into a trillion dollar industry through active deployments with market leaders.

About the Job
At Gravis, we engineer solutions at the nexus of hardware and software every day: bringing new perception and control technologies onto awesome, autonomous machines. Our Rooftop Autonomous Control Kit (Rack) combines sensors, compute, communication and networking modules toward a manufacturer-agnostic solution that can be applied to a variety of construction machines regardless of type and age. We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced hardware engineer to lead the development of our hardware products: you will spearhead the entire hardware development process, from design and prototyping to development and production. You will coordinate and supervise the creation of hardware that elegantly encapsulates state-of-the-art robotic sensors and components—while working to ensure that the designs can withstand the harsh conditions of real-world construction environments. You will lead a team of talented engineers and designers by driving innovation, ensuring product quality, managing procurement, and meeting project deadlines.

Your Responsibilities

    • Manage the design, production, and manufacturing of our key hardware products.
    • Lead the hardware design team and the agile development process, working with leadership to set and maintain project timelines.
    • Ensure a cohesive hardware “brand identity” across various components and product cycles.
    • Ensure the appropriate selection of design and manufacturing processes to support various stages of growth, project timelines, manufacturing volumes.
    • Directly contribute to the design, modeling, and production of hardware items, while working closely with a team of mechanical design engineers to ensure work is divided appropriately.
    • Develop and maintain hardware product cycle documentation, timelines and tools to facilitate improved development, procurement, and service in the lifespan of hardware products.
    • Identify and communicate with vendors and manufacturers to support hardware production, procurement, and assembly.
    • Support with the production of customer-facing documentation of product specifications and manuals to support hardware use and marketing.
    • Propose and manage hiring initiatives to strategically build a nimble and highly effective hardware team.

Required Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
    • Proven track record of at least 5 years of experience driving hardware product development.
    • Experience with product compliance/certification (IP rating, vibration, EMC, etc).
    • Strong leadership skills with experience managing and motivating cross-functional teams.
    • Excellent project management skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage resources, and meet deadlines.
    • In-depth knowledge of hardware design principles, manufacturing processes, and quality standards.
    • Experience with CAD software and other design tools.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively convey technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Additional Beneficial Skills

    • Experience in designing for high-reliability applications, such as automotive or aerospace, where strict quality and safety standards are crucial.
    • Proficiency with visualization tools to create representations that clearly communicate hardware designs.
    • Experience with operational procurement and components sourcing.
    • Experience with electrical engineering.
