Gravis Robotics builds technology that turns heavy construction machines into intelligent and autonomous robots. Our unique combination of learning-based automation and augmented remote control lets one operator safely conduct a fleet of earthmoving machines with super-human productivity. Building upon over a decade of academic experience honing the cutting edge of large-scale robotics, we continue to innovate as we rapidly position ourselves in a trillion dollar industry through active deployments with market leaders.

We are looking for a mechanical engineer to own the mechanical design of the Gravis hardware package that turns regular excavators into awesome, autonomous machines. You will work with engineering teams in Zurich & abroad to design, engineer, prototype, test, refine, manufacture, and implement custom hardware that enables our AI to control and assist with the safe operation of heavy machines. You are a pragmatic and creative problem-solver, capable of working both independently and with others, and are intrinsically driven to solve challenging applied problems with a rigorous attention to detail.

Responsibilities

    • Own the end-to-end mechanical design of components for our vehicle integration package, from initial concept and rapid prototyping to final production-ready designs.
    • Create and manage comprehensive production-level documentation, including detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, Bill of Materials (BOMs), and assembly instructions within our PDM/PLM system.
    • Act as the primary technical contact for external manufacturers and suppliers; managing timelines, providing DFM feedback, and ensuring on-time delivery of high-quality components.
    • Develop test fixtures and perform hands-on troubleshooting of multidisciplinary challenges (e.g., waterproofing, thermal, structural) in a fast-paced, high-urgency environment.
    • Partner closely with electrical and software teams to seamlessly integrate sensors, compute units, and wiring harnesses into rugged, reliable systems.

Requirements

    • University degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
    • Professional experience in mechanical design for manufactured products.
    • Strong proficiency in 3D CAD (Solidworks preferred), with a focus on speed, efficiency, documentation, and best practices for manufacturability.
    • Proven experience working directly with manufacturers, including DFM reviews, supplier communication, and quality control.
    • Practical knowledge of GD&T and creating production-ready 2D drawings.
    • Solid understanding of IP ratings & material selection for hardware used in harsh environments
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-urgency environment.
    • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

Beneficial Experience

    • Experience with PDM/PLM systems for revision control and engineering change management
    • Experience designing and integrating mechatronic systems (e.g., motors, sensors, actuators).
    • Proficiency with FEA and CFD simulation tools for structural and thermal analysis.
    • Previous experience with robotics, particularly with ROS/ROS2.
    • Hands-on prototyping and fabrication skills (e.g., 3D printing, machining, wiring).
This is an opportunity to join a dynamic and versatile team, and to be part of a young startup that will revolutionize heavy construction. You will get the chance to apply your skills to critical tasks, while learning from a team of world-class robotic engineers. Gravis Robotics offers a fair market salary and an excellent working location in the city of Zurich.
