The Role
As the Director, Food Safety and Sanitation, you will oversee the execution of corporate and local plant company policies, procedures, and training elements. This role will set standards for maintaining cleaning equipment, developing cleaning equipment planned maintenance Implementation for sanitation assurance initiatives, microbiological objectives, allergen control, pest control and plant regulatory compliance programs for sanitation and calibration programs in five key areas of responsibility to include plant sanitation, food safety, SQF Safe Quality Food and HACCP. The individual in this position will effectively work with each sites production and quality assurance management to ensure that key food safety and sanitation objectives and goals are achieved. This position is in Chicago or remotely at home.

· Responsible for the execution of all corporate food safety related strategies, policies and procedures at the plant level. Effectively communicate and work with all related departments to identify food safety hazards and to effectively mitigate food safety risks
· Ensure compliance with local, state and federal food safety laws including applicable parts of the Code of Federal Regulations, FDA Food Code and Good Manufacturing Practices Regulations including industry best practices
· Assist in external auditing to meet audit expectations. Analyze audit results; implement corrective actions as required to address audit nonconformance
· Customarily audit food safety practices to evaluate performance and compliance; sanitation deviations, provide objective feedback to plant management to address opportunities for improvement
· Work with R&D team to ensure product safety on new product introductions
· Understand chemical specifications and their effectiveness/proper application for different processing and packaging equipment SSOP’s, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedure.
· Conduct scheduled sanitation validation audits including dismantling and inspecting critical processing and packaging equipment to ensure optimal cleanliness/sanitization
· Ensure operational efficiencies, training and development, and streamlines process related to food safety with a focus toward CI (continuous improvement), to maintain standards and controls are in place and aligned with industry best practices and associated regulatory and/or compliance requirements
· Direct activities related to pest control including monitoring, recordkeeping, exclusion practices and treatment programs
· Define and implement the HACCP Plan across sites.
· Define, managing and enforcing the implementation, verification and validation of Food Safety programs such as HACCP/SSOP/HARPC and FDA Food Safety Plan
· Keep abreast of emerging issues/news in food industry and regulatory agencies on food safety and quality requirements that impact manufacturing facilities and provide potential solutions to the leadership team
· Support and provide input for learning and development needs of manufacturing employees to establish robust food safety culture at the manufacturing site(s)
· Conduct plan reviews of new construction for regulatory compliance
· Define appropriate safety and sanitation metrics and report periodically to leadership team


    • Bachelor of Science Degree in business or technical discipline, i.e. Engineering, Operations Management, Microbiology, Food Science or related field
    • 10+ years industry experience, with responsibility for a broad spectrum of Food Safety and Sanitation elements
    • Thorough, practical, and functional knowledge of food safety regulations including current regulations and directives and HACCP/SSOP/HARPC programs
    • Strong auditing and assessment skills
    • Strong written and verbal skills as well as project/program management capabilities
    • Preferred Certification: HACCP, PCQI, ASQ, PMP, Lean Six Sigma Greenbelt, ISO Lead Auditor
    • Excellent Project & Change Management
    • Integrated Sanitation and Pest Control Management
    • Thorough GMP and Personnel Hygiene Management
    • Strong analytical abilities, technical writing ability and comprehensive understanding of quality toolbox (SPC, 8D root cause analysis, control and inspection standards, basic statistics, etc.)
    • Open-minded self-starter with the ability to adapt, improvise and problem solve, as well manage multiple tasks and projects and concisely explain complex issues supported with data. Team player with strong interpersonal skills
    • Adapts and thrives in a demanding, start-up, fast-paced environment
    • Possesses a high level of critical thinking
    • Must understand and comply with the rules, regulations, policies, and procedures of GTI
    • Understanding of the Medical Marijuana laws, rules and regulations is preferred and the passion to further their understanding and knowledge of the industry and the laws
    • Cross-functional team leadership skills, as well as coaching and mentoring skills
    • Demonstrated competence to work and communicate effectively with all levels in the organization
