Product Manager - Animal Behaviour

About the Role

In this role you will be focused on building products that leverage the data we collect from our collars. This data enables us to understand and analyse how each cow behaves and use that to generate insights for farmers - everything from reproductive cycles and illnesses to grazing patterns and even the order they come to the milking shed each day - delivering the right behavioural insights to farmers helps them keep their cows happy and healthy, and their farms profitable and sustainable.

This area of our product is unique in that it goes deep into the biology and behaviour of animals, leverages our world-leading hardware (our collars!), involves complex data science and machine learning systems, and ties all of this together with beautiful mobile and web-based software applications through which value is delivered to farmers.

You will be responsible for

    • Discovering, defining and delivering products that are most important and impactful to our mission, working collaboratively with the machine learning/data lead who owns the development of our underlying animal behaviour models and systems, as well as your product engineering and design peers.

    • Building knowledge through your own research and by developing strong relationships with farmers, internal and external subject-matter experts and the cows themselves to understand the problems worth solving and the untapped opportunities worth pursuing.

    • Product evangelism, championing the value of our product and showcasing its application to our farmers. You will work with product marketing and account managers to advocate internally and externally, building awareness and understanding to ensure the success of our animal behaviour products in the field.

Who are we looking for

    • We are especially interested in people with a strong foundation in animal / agricultural science or dairy farming, who are ready to focus that knowledge and experience into building technological solutions for farmers. You must be willing to learn the skills required to thrive as a product manager.

    • If you come from a product management background but lack experience in this domain, you must be someone deeply curious and demonstrate a commitment to dive in, learn fast and in-depth.

    • Someone who is comfortable working with academic research and literature. This domain is grounded in science, and a huge amount of knowledge and opportunity exists in leveraging this.
    • Someone who is not afraid to get their hands dirty (literally). Animals are quite the variable to work with. We expect the unexpected, roll with the punches and take unconventional routes to get results if required.
    • A strategic, blue sky, thinker. We strive to not only use animal data to solve known problems for our farmers, but to innovate systems and products that tap previously untapped opportunities.
    • Someone who can embrace uncertainty and ambiguity. We often operate in unchartered territory. Your ability to navigate through this, slicing, testing, learning and iterating is critical. We believe in continuous discovery.
    • A brilliant communicator. Whether it is with your teammates, internal stakeholders, external stakeholders or our farmers, communicating clearly and effectively must be a strength.
    • A highly effective collaborator. The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. You must be skilled in working with engineers, designers, other product managers and other business stakeholders.
    • Someone with high agency. Proactive, resourceful, resilient and relentlessly positive.

About Halter

At Halter we deliver solutions to cattle farmers that enable them to run more productive AND more sustainable operations, leveraging hardware, firmware, software and machine learning.

Our solar-powered smart collars, paired with our digital software platform, make it possible for farmers to virtually fence and remotely shift their cattle, monitor each animal’s behaviour, reproduction and health 24/7, and track the production of pasture and other forages across their land, in real-time.

Our mission is to become the default operating system for cattle farming, and drive a step change in one of the world's most important industries - one that has operated much the same way, with the same constraints, for decades.

We are on the right trajectory to achieve this mission. Since commercialising our product we have been New Zealand’s fastest growing company (1539% growth between 2021-2024). We have happy and successful customers in some of the world’s key pasture-based cattle markets (USA, Australia and New Zealand), with many more markets to come. We have most recently closed our Series D funding round, raising USD100 million at a USD 1 billion valuation. We are backed by leading international VCs including BOND and Bessemer, who have previously invested in other leading technology companies like SpaceX, Tesla, Meta, Uber, Airbnb, Spotify, Rocket Lab and Canva.
