Chief of Staff

Auckland

Full-time /
On-site
The future of food production hinges on an important question: How do we feed the world’s growing population without compromising our natural resources? Both dairy and beef farmers feed our population and hold the keys to vital climate solutions. At Halter, we’re on a mission to enable farmers to run the most productive and sustainable farms. Farmers are using Halter to break free from the time-intensive constraints of conventional farming. They’re growing more grass, increasing milk production and/or helping their cattle gain more weight (for beef farming) and improving the health and well-being of their cows.

We bridge deep tech into farming. Halter enables farmers to remotely shift, virtually fence and proactively monitor their cows’ health and behaviour. Can you imagine watching 500 cows or cattle walk calmly towards the milking shed or their next break? No quad bikes, no dogs, no fences. Just a mob of cows walking at their own pace. People say it looks like magic. Our customers are revolutionising farming with Halter. It's changing lives and transforming an industry.

People join Halter because they want to do meaningful work. By joining us you’ll be solving challenging problems within a talented team and a culture built for high performance. Our team out-think, out-work and out-care. We’re committed to delivering real change in the world - this isn’t easy, and in truth, we love that it’s hard. We’re backed to deliver on a mission that matters by Tier 1 investors including Bessemer Venture PartnersDCVCBlackbirdPromus Ventures, Rocket Lab’s Peter Beck and Icehouse ventures.

About the role

We're in search of our first-ever Chief of Staff to join our team and provide crucial support to our COO, CEO, and the wider executive crew. We're after someone who's like the Swiss Army knife and can help level up our Exec team. You will be reporting to the COO and ensuring smooth sailing across the board, from strategy and decision-making to keeping everyone in check.

Your role? Think of yourself as the mastermind behind keeping everyone in the loop and fired up about our goals. You'll be diving into the nitty-gritty alongside our Exec team and senior leaders, tackling the trickiest challenges head-on. You'll likely have Halter's mission, strategy, tactics, and values memorised, always knowing how and where to apply them.

This isn't your run-of-the-mill job. It's a unique opportunity that could open doors to other senior roles within Halter. You'll have your hands in everything from supporting on capital raising to shaping our strategy, all while playing a vital role in keeping our team humming along smoothly. You might find yourself, supporting on market entry to Europe or stepping up to oversee departments like Marketing or Customer Support until we find the perfect leader.

Aside from being on the Halter rollercoaster as we take on the world, you will also gain great exposure to Senior leaders within and outside of Halter, gaining valuable insight into executive decision-making, and work closely with our Exec team and Board.

What your day could look like

    • Drive strategic clarity: Team up with the COO and other Execs to diagnose, analyse, plan out, and bring major strategic shifts and critical priorities to life. Dig into data, whip up presentations and memos, and marshall key people to help make and action critical decisions.
    • Keep Things Running Smoothly: Make sure our day-to-day operations are running like a well-oiled machine by setting up and fine-tuning processes. Help folks get on board with changes and upgrades to how we operate, making sure everyone's clear on what's happening and why.
    • Making Things Better: Hunt down ways to make things easier and faster around here, then roll out plans to make it happen. Keep everyone on track by setting up meetings, taking notes, and making sure we're following through on what we said we'd do.
    • Be The Glue: Be the go-between for the COO and other department heads, keeping everyone on the same page and working together smoothly. Take charge of projects that involve different teams, making sure we're all hitting our deadlines and working together effectively.
    • Tracking How We're Doing: Set up fancy reports and dashboards to keep an eye on how we're doing as a company and whether we're hitting our goals. Give the big bosses regular updates on how we're doing, what's going well, and what we could do better.
    • Other Special Side-Projects: Take the lead or lend a hand on special projects we throw your way, whether it's diving into what the competition is up to or stepping in to run a team or key project for a period of time.

Who we’re looking for

    • 5+ years of experience in consulting, finance, legal, business strategy, or operations, with a preference for those who've navigated the dynamic world of startups or rapid-growth companies.
    • A team player with exceptional relationship-building skills, able to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and influence outcomes without formal authority.
    • A master of time management, adept at prioritising tasks and orchestrating multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment.
    • Results-oriented with a hands-on approach, willing to dive into the trenches to ensure goals are met.
    • Proven track record in project management and organisational prowess, ensuring smooth execution from start to finish.
    • Possesses a high degree of dynamic range, seamlessly transitioning between strategic vision and detailed execution as needed.
    • Demonstrates sound judgment, capable of making quality decisions amidst complex, ambiguous, multi-dimensional challenges.
    • Strong financial acumen and commercial savvy, capable of swiftly developing models and scrutinising numbers.
    • Highly flexible and responsive to changing priorities, able to pivot seamlessly when circumstances demand.
    • Sharp critical thinking skills, equipped with keen observational abilities and adept problem-solving prowess.
    • Exceptional executive communication skills, adept at distilling complex information into clear and concise insights.

Our Office First Approach (For Auckland Offices)

We do have flexible working hours and you can work from home when you need to but we encourage our team to be in the office as much as you can.

We have an office-first approach because we would like to keep the opportunity for teams to have spontaneous interactions which in turn has allowed our team at Halter to foster strong relationships. Stronger relationships make it easier to disagree, give feedback, do meaningful work and as a result, be higher performing as a team.

This is applicable mainly for our Auckland office-based roles rather than on-the-road roles in teams such as Customer Success or Business Development teams.
