Junior Data Analyst
Auckland
Engineering & Data – Data, Data Science & Machine Learning /
Full-time /
On-site
About the Role
We are looking for a deeply curious, driven and enthusiastic Data Analyst to join our wider data science and machine learning team. In this role, you will play a key part in supporting our product development by extracting and communicating insights from our massive datasets within the team and beyond. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the beating heart of Halter’s digital product and get involved in a wide range of projects.
You will be responsible for:
- Conducting deep research into our datasets to help us understand what optimal looks like, across all domains from animal behaviour through to pasture modelling.
- Creating and maintaining tooling to help us monitor our products in the field and understand their performance.
- Responding to requests from across the business and customer base, extracting data and preparing reports.
Who are we looking for?
- You are highly curious: you’re not afraid to ask questions, and are motivated by answering hard questions.
- You’re proactive: where appropriate, you go beyond the scope of the questions you’ve been given and investigate further, to ensure the results of your analysis are comprehensive.
- You have strong analytical and statistical skills. You’ll need to be aware of common statistical traps to avoid introducing bias into your analysis, and be able to effectively communicate the results of your analysis.
- In this role, you’ll be using SQL, Python, R and other software tools to query, analyse and visualise data. You will be fluent in these languages and continue to keep up-to-date with the latest technologies.
- You are a hard worker & a quick learner: the problems that we work on require deep knowledge of pasture-based farming and cow health and reproduction, as well as the details of our internal systems. You may not start with a background in these areas, but a proven ability to learn quickly and a hunger for learning will be essential.
- You are a highly effective collaborator and incredible teammate. You’ll be working with many people across the business, from machine learning specialists through to farmers and account managers. You’ll need to balance requests and manage expectations from multiple stakeholders, and adjust your approach and communication depending on the audience.
- You have proven experience: you have strong demonstrated experience in a data analysis role, and/or a tertiary degree in statistics or a related field.
- You have strong intuition: we are looking for someone who always considers the real-world implications of the data they are looking at. You’re able to sniff out inconsistencies in data and follow those threads to identify root causes.
- Our farmers expect us to know farming as well as they do, understand why they do what they do, and identify where they can do it better. Curiosity beyond technology and into the agricultural domain will be a strong motivation for you.

Our Office First Approach
There’s a reason you visit your friends in person, live with your family and don’t do dinners over Zoom. Humans are wired for connection. We believe a world-class, in-person office culture is the best way for high-performing teams.
Being office first is a core pillar of our culture. We believe in-person connections are key to driving your own growth, learning, impact, and building genuine long-lasting relationships. We don’t like having heaps of rules or policies, but this means having strong, trusted relationships is critical.
We’re office first, not office only. This means working from the office everyday is our default setting, but we flex when we need to. We have a high-trust culture, so everyone is trusted to do what’s best for Halter.
Our office vibe is something special, it’s hard to describe until you’re here, but people at Halter who have come from fully remote or hybrid companies say they could never go back - the high energy and spectacular people they are now surrounded by everyday makes work so enjoyable. Your growth, your learning and your impact is truly unlimited here, and a big part of that comes from being together solving problems, innovating, building context, and constantly learning from each other.
