The Lead Data Engineer is a pivotal leader in the design, development, and management of data warehouses, ETL processes, data ingestion strategies, and data pipelines for large, complex data sets that drive Hanna’s reporting and business intelligence initiatives. This role will oversee and guide the data engineering team while collaborating with technical teams and business stakeholders to ensure seamless and efficient data flow across the organization. The Lead Data Engineer will be responsible for architecting scalable solutions, setting technical direction, and ensuring world-class standards of data integrity and system performance. 

Primary Duties (Identified Essential Functions*)

    • Architecture and Optimization: Leads the design and implementation of advanced, highly available data architecture and processing solutions. Oversees optimization strategies for data fidelity, system performance, timeliness of data delivery, and resource utilization to ensure alignment with business reporting and data insight needs.  
    • Data Pipeline Design and Management: Guides the development, deployment, and maintenance of scalable ETL pipelines on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) using tools such as dbt and Fivetran. Ensures data integrity, consistency, and availability across BigQuery, SQL Server, and Power BI environments.  
    • Integration: Directs technical integrations and data ingestion with a variety of data sources and platforms including relational databases, cloud services, and third-party applications. Ensures seamless data flow and system compatibility.  
    • Leadership: Mentors, coaches, and develops data engineering team members. Serves as an escalation point and advanced resource as a subject matter expert regarding enterprise data infrastructure, data delivery pipelines, and reporting systems. Provides strategic guidance and technical expertise to the team and organization.  
    • Collaboration: Coordinates closely with cross-functional teams including e-commerce developers, data analysts, infrastructure admins, cybersecurity engineers, and business stakeholders. Leads efforts to gather requirements, understand data needs and usage, and implement effective technical solutions.  
    • Troubleshooting and Support: Oversees the monitoring and troubleshooting of data pipelines and ETL processes. Provides leadership in resolving issues, ensuring minimal system disruption, and aligning solutions with disaster recovery protocols. Provides after-hours/off-schedule support as needed and participates in a regular on-call support rotation.  
    • Documentation and Best Practices: Establishes and enforces comprehensive documentation standards for ETL processes, data pipelines, and data architecture. Promotes and implements standards and guidelines for data engineering, deployment, and analytics.  
    • Innovation: Champions the adoption of industry trends, technologies, and best practices. Proactively identifies, develops, tests, and implements cutting-edge technical solutions to enhance data engineering capabilities in support of operational goals including system security, stability, and scalability, data availability, and insight delivery. 
    • Supervisory Responsibilities: Leads and mentors the data engineering team, promoting best practices, facilitating technical skill development, and providing architectural guidance. Ensures effective team collaboration and professional growth.

    • Organization: Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects, and maintain high-quality outcomes.

Education & Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s or Master’s (preferred) Degree in Computer Science, Data Science, or a related technical field.
    • 7+ years of data engineering experience, with a demonstrated track record of leading the development of enterprise-level data platforms.
    • 7+ years of experience building and optimizing data warehouses, pipelines, and ETL processes.
    • 4+ years of experience supporting high-volume e-commerce/retail operations.
    • 4+ years of experience supporting data partner integration

Location

    • Portland, OR - Hybrid HIGHLY preferred
    • Open to remote
$120,000 - $170,000 a year
