POSITION SUMMARY
HASI is currently seeking an associate/senior associate with renewable financing experience to join our team in Annapolis, MD. This individual will work in the Investment Group with the Grid Connected investment team in building and managing HASI’s Grid Connected investment portfolio. The types of investments in the Grid Connected investment team will include utility scale wind, solar and storage projects. The core responsibilities of the role will include supporting transaction execution, including analyzing and creating financial models, completing due diligence, reconciling financial documentation for transaction execution, supporting business development activities, and participating in ongoing portfolio asset management.
EDUCATION AND PRIOR WORK EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree from a four-year institution; CFA and/or MBA preferred
At least 3 years of experience in finance in the renewable energy sector, ideally including tax equity partnerships, project finance and structured debt or equity finance.
Experience in modelling, ideally involving structured debt and equity investments, including intimate knowledge of tax equity partnership flip and lease models for wind and solar assets.
Demonstrable experience with renewable energy project underwriting and transaction document negotiation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Investing Activities
Build and manage financing models, including underlying project operating pro forma’s, to analyze and structure investments and evaluate the associated risks.
Support transaction and due diligence processes for debt/equity investments and acquisition activity, including analyzing terms in underlying project agreements which may impact economic returns (i.e. operating agreements, financing agreements, and power offtake agreements).
Work closely with cross-functional finance team (Investment Group, accounting, and engineering) to develop appropriate assumptions for project investment models.
Develop and understand portfolio diversification or concentration considerations to evaluate and manage the associated risks.
Work closely with the Investment Group in all facets of investment execution, from initial qualification evaluation, term sheet development, internal investment proposal, due diligence, and documentation closing.
Capital Markets Activities
As needed, support the financing processes for investment level project finance transactions, including assisting in negotiation of documents, facilitating investor due diligence processes, and ownership of financing model.
Liaise for corporate due diligence requirements related to underlying project and portfolio investments.
Portfolio Management
Work closely with the members of the Portfolio Management and risk management teams to provide specific investment expertise to assist in commercial decision making relating to portfolio assets.
SPECIFIC RECOMMENDED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
Very strong MS Excel financial modeling and data mining skills, with demonstrable experience developing and managing complex financial models
Strong attention to detail
Relevant industry experience in energy, banking, tax equity/equity investing, consulting or the energy/utilities sector
Familiarity with energy project finance transactions and documentation
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, innovative, entrepreneurial environment
Excellent written and verbal communication skills (to include listening)
Dependable and reliable, excellent at taking initiative, can work independently without close supervision, and be a supportive team member
