Hello Neighbor has a robust internship program across multiple departments of the organization. We deeply value intern contributions and our internships are open to individuals from all backgrounds, students or otherwise.
All internships have the following requirements:

- Contribution to a joint-intern project/event
- Attend Hello Neighbor all-hands meetings, key events, regular intern meetings
- Provide final presentation at conclusion of internship
- Fall start date: Monday, September 15th, 2025
- Spring end date: Thursday, April 30th, 2026


Core Internship Requirements: 

- Duration: See start dates above, with potential extension opportunities. The role requires 8-12 hours per week for the Fall and Spring seasons.
- Location: The position offers an in-person structure requiring the interns to be in the office at 6587 Hamilton Ave. between Tuesday and Thursday, depending on the candidate's location and organizational needs.
- Compensation: Interns will be compensated at $12.50/hour and may explore opportunities for college credits.


Smart Start Intern


    • Description: The Smart Start intern will work with the Perinatal Case Manager to provide perinatal case management support to pregnant immigrants and refugees. Responsibilities include pregnancy appointment accompaniment, WIC training, resource identification, advocacy, and perinatal education with a cultural lens. This role offers meaningful hands-on experience and the opportunity to make a positive impact. Requirements include strong communication skills, having comfort in birthing spaces, and the ability to navigate cross-cultural sex/gender norms in an intentionally empathetic manner.

      Here are some tasks you may be assigned:
    • Appointment accompaniment
    • Donation management
    • Perinatal Education Session support
    • Resource research and development

    • Gain hands-on experience in perinatal case management focused on immigrant and refugee communities.
    • Support clients with pregnancy appointment accompaniment and advocacy in healthcare settings.
    • Develop culturally responsive communication skills, navigating diverse sex and gender norms with empathy.
    • Identify and connect clients to community resources and social services, including WIC program support.
    • Deliver perinatal health education with cultural sensitivity and strengthen effectiveness in cross-cultural environments.

Employment Intern


    • Description: This internship participates in our Employment programs through administrative and programming support, as well as through some direct client services (dependent on experience). Training is provided

      Here are some examples of tasks you may be assigned:
    • Help create / revise programming
    • Help with program logistics (set up, outreach, coordinating transportation, creating flyers)
    • Help with filing / organizing case notes and other documentation
    • Help with communications, reminders, and organization
    • Compile a weekly list of entry-level employment opportunities
    • Call employers to inquire about job requirements
    • Receive training and experience working with interpretation services
    • Possibly help orchestrate hiring event

    • Outcome: 
    • Gain practical experience supporting employment services for immigrants and refugees through administrative and programmatic tasks.
    • Assist in developing and revising workforce programming while coordinating logistics for employment events and outreach.
    • Strengthen organizational skills through documentation, case management, and communication with clients and employers.
    • Build knowledge of local job markets and employer requirements by compiling opportunities and conducting outreach calls.
    • Develop teamwork, cross-cultural communication, and client support skills, including working with interpretation services.

Education & Community Empowerment (ECE) Intern


    • ECE intern will work with our program managers to facilitate the ongoing implementation of our youth tutoring, mentorship, early education, English language, and other programming. The ideal candidate is a reliable, organized, good communicator with respect for diverse backgrounds and who is excited about supporting our new neighbors in Pittsburgh. The programming connects immigrants, refugees, and migrants with volunteer supporters for relationship building, tutoring, and support reaching self-identified goals. The intern will work together with staff to research resources for clients, communicate with program participants, and support events across the department.

      Here are some tasks you may be assigned:
    • Communicates with program participants (including mailings, emails, and phone messages)
    • Attends & supports community events
    • Assists with implementation of program trainings
    • Collects and organizes program data
    • Develops and edits program materials

    • Gain hands-on experience supporting youth-focused and early education programs for immigrant, refugee, and migrant communities.
    • Assist with tutoring, mentorship, English language, and early childhood education activities, enhancing program facilitation skills.
    • Develop strong organizational and communication skills through coordination with program participants, volunteers, and staff.
    • Strengthen cross-cultural communication and interpersonal skills by working closely with diverse families and communities.
    • Support event planning and resource research to align programming with clients’ goals, while building administrative and client-centered service experience.

Development and Engagement Intern


    • This role offers a unique opportunity to directly support our mission of empowering refugee and immigrant families while developing highly transferable professional skills. This isn't just a typical internship; you'll be an integral part of our Development and Engagement department, contributing to essential operational tasks that power our fundraising efforts and 
      volunteer programs. You'll gain practical, real-world experience that looks great on a resume and sets you up for future success

      What You Will Gain:
    • Fundraising and Donor Relations Expertise: Understand the backbone of nonprofit funding by assisting with donor and volunteer databases, data cleanup, and supporting our CRM transition. You'll also learn the crucial art of donor acknowledgment.
    • Volunteer Program Management Skills: Work closely with our Volunteer Coordinator to track outreach efforts, manage the volunteer calendar, and coordinate information sessions.

    • Assisting with keeping donor and volunteer databases updated.
    • Performing essential data cleanup to ensure accuracy.
    • Supporting the CRM transition process.
    • Aiding in the acknowledgment process for donors.
    • Supporting the tracking of in-kind donations.
    • Helping the Volunteer Coordinator track outreach efforts.
    • Managing the volunteer calendar.
    • Keeping track of information sessions.
    • Potentially assisting with special projects and supporting community engagement efforts through email/phone communications.
