About the Job
Radically changing the home services industry requires a significant investment across a breadth of research topics. The science group at HomeX is expanding to help us do exactly this. We are currently working to solve some of the hardest problems in the areas of stochastic optimization, vehicle routing, logistics, dynamic pricing, natural language processing, machine reasoning, knowledge engineering, and ontology. Joining our group now provides opportunities to help define future direction, break ground in new areas, and contribute back to the community.

We’re looking for a Research Engineer to join our applied science team in Cambridge, UK. You’ll be responsible for developing state-of-the-art algorithms to drive the rollout of real-time decision and pricing technologies in the home services industry. You will also create systems that analyse large quantities of real-world data to improve our decision making as we follow our ambitions.

Key Responsibilities

    • Develop scalable algorithms for assigning and routing technicians to tasks, pricing our services, ranking technicians, and classifying customers. 
    • Develop and own real-time decision making software that underpins the HomeX home services platform. 
    • Evaluate these algorithms from real-world experience as we roll out.
    • Undertake data-driven studies to inform HomeX’s market rollout strategy. 
    • Support the exciting integration of HomeX’s real-time inventory, diagnostics and marketplace services.

Desired Qualifications

    • Master’s degree or PhD in Operations Research, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, or significant relevant industry experience. 
    • Experience in mathematical modelling and simulating complex systems, and/or markets and market mechanisms.
    • Some knowledge of game theory would be advantageous. 
    • Familiarity with a range of up-to-date data science techniques. 
    • Understanding of optimization concepts, for example linear and integer programming, routing algorithms, stochastic optimization. 
    • Experience with languages such as Python or JavaScript/TypeScript, and collaborative coding with Git.
