Position Summary
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Vice President of Medical Affairs to build and lead our global medical affairs function. This individual will be responsible for developing and executing the medical affairs strategy and capabilities with an initial focus on supporting the late-phase clinical development and commercialization of our lead program darovasertib, in Uveal Melanoma [UM]. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of and experience with medical strategy and execution for late-phase oncology development programs and, ideally, medical affairs product launch experience. The successful candidate will have strong leadership skills and a track record of successful collaboration with cross-functional teams and relationship building with external stakeholders.
This role reports to the Chief Commercial Officer and will require close partnership with the Chief Medical Officer and other functions. This role is based in IDEAYA’s South San Francisco, California office, with an expectation to be in office 4 days a week.
What you'll do:
- Accountable for the leadership, development, and execution of Medical Affairs strategy to align with the overall company strategic imperatives and support the safe and effective use of our products by customers and patients.
- Accountable for developing the scientific narratives and integrated evidence plans that will serve as the company’s strategic roadmap to align scientific, medical regulatory, health economics and outcomes research [HEOR], market access and commercial objectives.
- Build and lead key Medical Affairs capabilities such as field medical, medical information, and a robust independent scientific research assessment process.
- Leading and role modeling cross functional collaboration and a one-team mindset approach to galvanizing internal and external stakeholders is essential. Key internal stakeholders include clinical development, regulatory affairs, and other cross-functional stakeholders to support product development, launch readiness and execution, and lifecycle management.
- Develop and execute a strategic plan for key opinion leader outreach and insights generation by proactively establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key opinion leaders, academic institutions, patient advocacy and medical societies in the field of oncology.
- Drive the generation and dissemination of scientific data through developing a company publications strategy inclusive of peer-reviewed publications, presentations, scientific symposia/congresses, and other channels of scientific exchange
- Assess needed capabilities and develop a Medical Affairs hiring plan within our company budget and operating model to leverage both internal and external resources
- Develop and oversee Medical Affairs annual operating budget, processes and systems
- Commitment to leading and executing in a compliant manner with regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies.
- Ability to travel (domestic and some international) to attend scientific congresses and meet key stakeholders - up to 50% travel.
Requirements:
- Terminal degree in health sciences (PhD, PharmD, MD), medical degree with oncology training preferred
- Minimum of 15 years of Oncology experience working in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry in Medical Affairs.
- Ability and willingness to perform in IDEAYA’s working-leader environment where all leaders are expected to demonstrate strategic leadership, role modeling our company values, demonstrating collaboration and teamwork, and rolling up your sleeves on day-to-day deliverables
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills with the ability to effectively present to and engage with a wide range of audiences.
- Proven experience leading medical affairs, or serving as a therapeutic medical affairs leader for an oncology product(s) (preferably in solid tumor and/or targeted oncology).
- U.S. and global medical affairs experience is required
- Track record of strong relationship building with KOLs, medical societies, and patient advocacy groups
- Strong understanding of oncology landscape, including clinical trial design, regulatory requirements, and market dynamics
- Experience with publication planning and lifecycle management
- Proven ability to plan and execute medical strategies and excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences.
- Strategic thinking with the ability to drive results in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
$333,800 - $392,600 a year

The expected salary range for this role that is based in our South San Francisco, California office is
- Non-MD level: $333,800 - $349,000
- MD level: $363,500 - $392,600
The final salary offered to a successful candidate will depend on several factors that may include but are not limited to the office location where this open position is located, the final candidates’ experience within their profession, experience in the disease areas we are striving to make an impact in as a company, length of time within the industry, educational background, and performance during the interview process.
