Mechanical Design Engineer - Payload/Controller

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will work closely with vehicle and electrical engineers to design Impossible’s vehicle payload sensor systems and the remote controller. This position designs and details complex components and assemblies and prepares bills of material for production utilizing 3D modeling software.


    • Mechanical design of sensor module components, optical image stabilization (OIS) and zooming actuators, module structures, and packaging using CAD
    • Ownership of remote controller, our most customer-facing assembly: Class-A surface enclosure design, component selection, ergonomic layout and packaging
    • Design of injection molded, sheet metal, and other component parts
    • Creation of detailed 2D manufacturing drawings, including clear documentation on mechanical inspection and test requirements
    • Rigorous tolerance analysis of module designs and individual components
    • Thermal analysis and layout of cooling systems within assemblies

Technical Requirements

    • B.S. in mechanical engineering or another relevant discipline
    • Strong knowledge of at least one major CAD package including part, surfacing and assembly design
    • Working knowledge of electronic components, circuits and electro-mechanical systems
    • Experience with customer-facing, ingress-protected plastic enclosures: design, prototyping, testing and mass production
    • Strong GD&T and mechanical drawing experience
    • Working knowledge of material science and selection
    • Thermal system and analysis knowledge
    • 3+ years working experience in the design and manufacturing field (incl. internships and min. 20hr/week college project groups)
    • Experience transitioning products from prototype to production
