At Instructure we build Canvas and a portfolio of other educational products to help teachers and students learn together. We intend to support education for everyone, regardless of their individual abilities, wherever and however they learn best.
It is therefore critical to us that we develop our software to meet and exceed the accessibility needs of our users and all relevant accessibility standards. We’re hiring an Accessibility QA Engineer to join our a11y team to not only help us catch any accessibility issues that slip past our very a11y conscious engineering teams, but also to help prevent accessibility problems before they occur by coaching our Design, Product Management, and Engineering teams.
What you'll do:
- Coach and influence our R&D teams on accessible design, development, and testing best practices
- Test new features before they release as part of our final accessibility audit; all our teams do their own testing first, you’re there as the final line of defense for our customers
- Investigate new accessibility technologies and standards, audit existing products for compliance, and help build remediation plans
- Coordinate with external auditors and vendors to complete third-party accessibility audits
- Present accessibility demonstrations to customers and other departments internally
- Conduct new-hire accessibility trainings software engineers and other R&D personnel
What you'll need:
- At least one year of experience specifically testing or auditing web products for accessibility, including at least one screen reader (JAWS, NVDA, and/or VoiceOver)
- A working knowledge of WCAG 2.1 criteria, and familiarity with how it is incorporated into accessibility expectations and legislation
- Demonstrated ability to research deep and challenging topics, such as how specific technologies or product features interact with WCAG
- Demonstrated ability to handle ambiguity and influence others, such as when engaging with a brand new team that doesn’t yet understand accessibility well
- Ability to work hours that significantly overlap European timezones (beginning at 9 am eastern time or earlier)
- Ability to frequently determine why an accessibility issue might be occurring and make suggestions on how to fix it, not just report the issue
What will get you extra bonus points:
- Experience manually testing web software functionality, not just accessibility
- Experience automating for accessibility
- Experience with fixing accessibility problems in code (fixing bugs, front-end development, etc)
