The Wind Engineering Director or Principal will lead and manage, as well as be an individual contributor, a team who would be accountable for the design and engineering of utility-scale wind energy facilities including the site selection, site diligence, selection/optimization of wind turbine technology, energy assessments, wind turbine layout, BOP design, and EPC technical coordination during the development, financing, and construction of the renewable facilities.  The role is expected to be approximately 20% management-level responsibilities and 80% individual contributor-level responsibilities.

Responsibilities

    • Ensure the highest level of environmental health and safety standards in all engineering with aspects of the wind energy facility.
    • Manage and be accountable for the technical due diligence, selection, and optimization of the wind turbine technology platform to meet the project requirements.
    • Manage internal and external teams performing the wind energy resource analysis for wind turbine siting and optimization. Design and evaluate wind turbine site suitability.
    • Manage and coordinate the team which maintains project site plans, preliminary engineering design, inclusive of wind turbine layout, preliminary electrical collection cable and access road siting, and other balance of plant considerations.
    • Coordinate with the development, permitting, and engineering teams to understand the impact to site development risks/challenges and find creative solutions to resolve them.
    • Help coordinate preliminary and final site technical due diligence of prospective and greenfield wind energy projects incorporating geotechnical, civil, electrical, and structural aspects of the project.
    • Responsible for comprehensive technical evaluation and comparison metrics to determine the most safe, commercially, and technically responsible EPC.
    • Support the Procurement team by leading the engineering and technical aspects of the RFP and contract negotiations of the turbine supply agreement and wind EPC agreement.
    • Responsible for the development and maintenance of technical specifications, design criteria, standards, and exhibits for wind energy projects to ensure all documentation is comprehensive and maintains a high-quality product using internal and external resources.
    • Maintain working knowledge of wind turbine technology and affiliated technical and market trends. Work with wind turbine Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) and the EPC to optimize equipment selection for projects as it relates to power curves, operational modes, mechanical suitability considerations, and curtailment strategies. 
    • Lead technical meetings, RFIs, and all technical design decisions.
    • Managing a small team of internal and external engineers and consultants.
    • Advise on any technical aspects during PPA negotiations; accountable for meeting the offtake requirements with a cost-optimized and constructable solution.
    • Technical lead for IE diligence and project financing for wind energy projects.

Minimum Experience

    • Minimum of 12 years for Director role and 16 years for Principal role managing design and engineering of wind turbines and BOP for utility-scale wind energy facilities.
    • Experience designing, optimizing, and supporting financing on at least 15 wind energy projects, working with multiple different wind turbine manufacturers.

Skills & Knowledge

    • selection and optimization of wind turbines with a deep understanding wind turbine technology and the portfolio of wind turbine manufacturers.
    • Familiar with how wind turbine selection impacts safety, reliability, CAPEX/OPEX, and the local community.
    • Strong understanding of civil, structural, mechanical, and electrical aspects of wind turbine technology and impact on turbine selection and BOP design.
    • Practical knowledge of working with EPCs during the design, commissioning, and construction phases.
    • Experienced in supporting the procurement of wind turbines and the technical exhibits of a turbine supply agreement. Strong understanding of these contracts.
    • Advanced understanding of advantages/trade-offs of the different technologies, system design, optimization levers, cost drivers, contracting pitfalls, construction challenges, life cycle use, and challenges.
    • Experienced in building, managing, and mentoring a team.
    • Familiar with the tax and debt financing and due IE diligence process.
    • Highly organized and effective project management skills.
    • Advanced knowledge of Excel.

Academic Background

    • Minimum BS in related Engineering field, Masters degree a plus.
    • Practical hands-on, field experience valued over academic experience.
