About Us

KIPP SoCal Public Schools (KIPP SoCal) is a nonprofit organization that operates tuition-free, open-enrollment, public charter schools focused on preparing students in systemically under-resourced communities in Southern California for choice filled lives. In July 2019, KIPP LA Public Schools and KIPP San Diego Public Schools united to become KIPP SoCal Public Schools to better meet the needs of our students. We currently operate 19 schools, educate approximately 8,200 students and support an additional 4,300 alumni who are attending high school and college.

The Opportunity

    • The Associate Director of Human Resources is responsible for providing leadership and support of HR related activities for KIPP SoCal Public Schools. Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the role is based out of the School Success Team office in East Los Angeles, CA. This role serves as a strategic partner to organizational leaders who help drive KIPP SoCal’s mission while working towards achieving its goals by being an advocate, counselor, and change leader that inspires achievement in our students through our team members. This role is responsible for managing a group of Human Resources Partners. 

Administration, Leadership & Compliance (35%)

    • Collaborate with the Director of Human Resources and colleagues to ensure alignment of all human resources programs, policies, practices, and activities with KIPP SoCal's strategic direction
    • Work with the Director of Human Resources in leading internal projects and conducting internal process improvements
    • Support in the construction of HR practices and policy design
    • Establish weekly work plans to effectively meet all goals
    • Participate in developing HR team goals and priorities
    • Work with Director of Human Resources in collaboration with the regional team to implement action plans that improve employee engagement and the employment experience
    • Gather, organize and analyze data to create strategic recommendations and implement plans
    • Partner with regional HR team and legal to interpret and communicate policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all federal, state and local employment-related laws and regulations
    • Conduct exit interviews; work  with HR leadership to develop retention strategies and monitor attrition 
    • Manage, coach, counsel and develop members of the HR team

Employee Relations (35%)

    • Coach and support HR Partners through comprehensive employee relations activities
    • Engage in complex employee relations matters, conduct thorough investigations and bring matters to appropriate resolution
    • Collaborate with organizational leaders to help facilitate program, practice and organizational changes and respond to team member feedback
    • Collaborate with Director of Human Resources in developing and executing action plans to resolve issues that have emerged from trend spotting; work with HR Partners to develop training, communication and other preventive plans to mitigate ongoing employment liability risk
    • Provide guidance to management at all levels to mitigate employee relations issues and promote a positive work culture

Employment (20%)

    • Lead annual new hire orientation efforts
    • Manage year-round new hire on-boarding process; work with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure proper on-boarding and placement
    • Lead end of school year team member off-boarding efforts
    • Manage year-round offboarding process; work with cross-functional stakeholders to ensure 100% process compliance

Regional Development (10%)

    • Construct and deliver training to team members on relevant HR topics

The Qualifications

    • The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years of relative work experience, a Bachelor’s Degree in business, organizational psychology, human resources and/or organizational development
    • HR designation by either HRCI or SHRM (i.e. SHRM-CP/SCP, SPHR/PHR) is highly preferred
    • Master's degree in human resources organizational development preferred
    • Experience working in a charter management organization and/or multi-site company preferred
    • Extensive knowledge of all federal, state, and local employment and workers' compensation laws
    • Full understanding of all HR functions and best practices
    • Must have a demonstrated ability to influence leaders across the organization
    • Must be able to bring new ideas to the HR department within an organization that serves at least 500+ FTEs
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop productive working relationships with stakeholders across functional and organizational lines
    • High quality verbal, written and presentation communication skills
    • Meticulous attention to detail with an ability to produce high-quality work in a dynamic work environment
    • Proficient in Google Apps, Microsoft Office and HRIS HRB/Portal Administration
    • Flexible team player; willing to step in and support team within the department and cross-functionally based on operational demands
    • Possess and maintain a valid California driver license
    • Be comfortable with 35-50% travel (mostly same day travel within LA County)
