About the role:

You will be responsible for maintaining and improving our existing Kong Enterprise suite. The suite includes the Kong Gateway (Nginx/OpenResty/Lua) and the web applications Kong Manager and Developer Portal. Your primary responsibility will be providing sustaining engineering for our customers, analyzing bug reports provided by our CX Engineers, and working closely with customers to resolve issues. 

We’re looking for Sustaining Software Engineers who can help us troubleshoot, fix product issues in production environments. Sustaining Software Engineers will ensure customer success by reducing the time to resolve customer or field reported issues and build systems and tools to solve the issues as they surface. Team also finds opportunities to automate processes where and whenever possible. This role expects a combination of Software Engineer and Level 3 CX Engineer to act as an effective liaison between engineering and support teams. 

Working closely with Engineering, Product Management, Sales and Customer Success you may also add features, plugins and custom fixes that will materially impact customer’s and Kong’s business. You will also help to maintain a streamlined build and test CI/CD system.

What you'll be doing:

    • Use your technical skills to troubleshoot and fix critical production issues.
    • Work closely with engineering teams to propose design changes and understand upcoming new features.
    • Build tools and techniques to help with Root Cause Analysis using the data available and by digging deep into code base.
    • Collaborate with other teams to understand the way Kong integrates with Customer systems to solve complex problems.
    • Understand customer use cases, work with support and escalation teams closely to be an effective liaison between engineering and support.
    • Reduce time to resolve customer issues in their production environments.
    • Work with Product management team to identify and implement enhancements to provide customer delight.
    • Identify and develop tools to help product support teams or other internal teams.
    • Maintain the CI/CD systems needed to deliver a high quality product.
    • Mentoring and pairing with other team members.
    • And any additional tasks required by manager.

What you'll bring:

    • 5+ years working in a team to develop, package and deliver applications
    • Good understanding and working experience with Micro-Service architecture environments
    • Experience writing and consuming RESTful APIs
    • Experience with data modeling in relational and no-SQL databases
    • Experience with scripting languages such as Perl, Ruby, Shell -- bonus points for Lua
    • Comfortable with git and Github workflows
    • Experience in a Software Engineering or Sustaining team role with troubleshooting and helping with root cause analysis for customer/support/field reported issues
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills -- engineers at Kong write the documentation for their products
    • Passion, curiosity, integrity and outstanding attention to detail while performing tasks

Bonus Points:

    • Hands-on experience with any of the following.
    • Hands on experience with Nginx/OpenResty/Lua.
    • Hands on experience with TypeScript/Javascript and Vue.
    • Hands on experience with Travis/Jenkins CI/CD.
    • Hands on experience with Kubernetes and Cloud Native environments, particularly with application deployments and connectivity is highly preferred.
