AI Fund – Satellite Office
The Data Engineer will work with our engineering team to execute on our first several Proof of Concepts to create timely, fuel-efficient routes for ships. You will be working closely with the team to quickly execute and iterate on the product vision You will play an integral role at a company at the forefront of bringing AI to the maritime shipping, the industry enabling our global economy.
API and data pipeline. You will be responsible for integrating the product with a weather API in order to estimate routes. You will build out the data pipeline, ensuring we can make route suggestions prior to a voyage by incorporating the latest sensor information from a ship as well as weather projections from the API. You will also incorporate data streams from the ship, market, and in order to make dynamic adjustments while the ship is on its route.
Integration and information development. You will be responsible for technically integrating the product into our partners’ operations as necessary. This could include ensuring the product interoperates with related fuel-saving products or building dashboards to convey information in a comprehensible way to stakeholders. Over time, this integration will become more complex and may include exploring integration of the algorithm into ECDIS, the vessel’s central console, as the product moves from on-shore to on-ship.
Support development of AI and simulation model. In addition to Python proficiency and a demonstrable ability to write and maintain medium-sized software codebases, you will be responsible for working with the lead MLE to apply specific technologies (anomaly detection, supervised learning, CNN/RNN architectures, preprocessing steps, what type of data and labels to collect) in accordance with the design of the overall AI system architecture. Once some parts of a playbook for analyzing and integrating a customer’s data, you may take the lead in applying it the system to new vessels and routes. Strong communication skills. You are expected to be able to communicate engineering efforts and issues to the engineering lead (and oftentimes, the business lead) and work with them to help address the partner/customer needs. You should have strong technical and non-technical communication skills and display an ability to convey complex technical topics to non-technical people without an engineering background. You will likely join meetings with our partners and correspond with their engineering teams, and may also travel to our partner offices to help with implementation.
(Bonus) Experience with naval architecture or mechanical engineering basics. Understanding the physical nature and operations of the ship and its engine may be critical to estimating its performance under a variety of circumstances. Our customers want to see that we are integrating naval architecture concepts in our engineering work, something that will also help with explainability. Experience with mechanical concepts will make this aspect easier to learn.
