In the pursuit of our mission, we are hiring Special Olympics coaches. Lansing School District is seeking an individual to create a supportive, challenging, and engaging learning environment for all athletes, regardless of their ability level. They encourage and challenge their athletes to develop their sport skills, techniques, extend their tactical awareness, and improve their physical and mental fitness.  

Minimum Qualifications

    • Special Olympics Coaches Certification is required.
    • Bachelor's Degree in a Special Education related field is preferred.
    • Must hold a valid driver's license and own reliable transportation.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse and inclusive organization.
    • Demonstrated knowledge in concepts of inclusion, including best practices and language use.

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience working or volunteering in youth programs
    • Regular access to a telephone or computer with internet access.
    • Ability and willingness to work occasional non-traditional workweek, i.e. evenings/weekends, and travel as needed with own transportation.
    • Ability to bend, squat, lift and walk while carrying 25lbs.
    • Ability to be on one's feet, standing and/or walking, for a long time, e.g. greater than 4 hours, without intermission.

Job Responsibilities

    • Coordinate practices prior to the winter games.
    • Stay overnight with athletes for duration of Summer Games (05/30/24-06/10/24).
    • Travel with the athletes to the event.
    • Ensure that athletes participate in all registered events.
    • Follow all health and safety protocols issued by the District and Special Olympics.
    • Collaborate and communicate with the administrators of the Special Populations and Special Education departments.
    • Follow the Oath of the Special Olympics Coach: I will respect the rights, dignity and worth of athletes, coaches, other volunteers, friends and spectators in Special Olympics. I will treat everyone equally regardless of sex, ethnic origin, religion or ability. I will be a positive role model for the athletes I coach.
$907 - $907 one-time
Compensation will be a stipend of $907.
