We’re seeking an experienced Electrical Systems Test Engineer with avionics experience to help us build a ‘lighter than air’ flight vehicle in Sunnyvale, CA. This position will serve as the lead test engineer responsible for electrical and avionics ground and flight test support, leading a team of engineers and technicians in bringing revolutionary airships to life. We believe in fast-cycle research and development, with the motto “build a little, test a little, learn a lot.”  The candidate must be able to understand existing systems and their implementation, then architect test strategy and tools to ensure solid deliverables for internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

    • Drive the integration and test effort for the avionics and electrical airship systems as the test plan architect
    • Work with system/software/hardware engineers to understand system requirements and limitation to see through what needs to be tested to build a comprehensive test plan
    • Prioritize test effort and development as our deliverable plans may be adjusted
    • Proactively learn our system design and implementation to drive test effort along with each milestone
    • Design and deploy test infrastructure spanning all electronics in our vehicle from flight computers to battery management systems
    • Develop a deep understanding of electronic components under test, becoming a subject matter expert in the device behavior under a range of environmental and system conditions
    • Coordinate cross-functional teams and external vendors to deploy high-quality test system deliverables in a timely manner
    • Drive end-to-end test campaigns from design validation through to qualification, production automation, and pre-flight testing
    • Triage and root-cause failures, using data analysis, test heritage, correlation to operating conditions, and one-off test campaigns
    • Develop automation software scripts to streamline design and production testing
    • Collect and collate test data, and document within technical reports
    • Draw conclusions from test data and communicate outcomes to the team
    • Develop quality processes for internally developed test procedures
    • Train technicians and other engineers on the proper application of test procedures as needed
    • Supporting all other engineering division/department tasks as required

Qualifications

    • BS in Computer/Software/Electrical/Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering or related technical field
    • Experience in an embedded development environment
    • Experience in testing SW on HW devices
    • Experience in triaging HW issues
    • Experience in profiling and benchmarking
    • Experience with regression testing Experience in C/C++ programming
    • Solid logical and critical thinking Good communication skills and ability to work within and across teams
    • Experience with LabVIEW and MATLAB Simulink
    • Understanding of electronics and electrical manufacturing processes (harnesses, component boards, etc.)
    • Attention to detail

    • Organizational skills

Preferred Qualifications

    • Experience using electrical testing equipment on high voltage/high power systems
    • Experience using CAD tools (SolidWorks, CATIA, associated PDM, etc.)
    • Aviation industry background
    • Experience in test-in-loop development (SIL, HIL, PIL)
    • Experience with Python and shell scripting development
    • Experience qualifying components and subsystems, and developing test plans for aerospace applications
    • Experience designing fixtures for different test specimens
