About Lumafield:
Lumafield was founded in 2019 to upgrade manufacturing.
We are engineers with deep experience across the product development cycle, from initial ideas to shipping hardware, across industries and specializations, who became frustrated by the cost and complexity of modern manufacturing. So we decided to upgrade it.
Engineers make million-dollar decisions every day, and they need tools that give them the greatest possible insight into their products. By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries. We started with industrial CT scanning, which for us was the most valuable but underutilized tool in the manufacturing toolbox, enabling us to rapidly inspect essential components non-destructively.
We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, to the entire business model, making the most advanced manufacturing tech more accessible to every industry. Our company, like our platform, is designed for upgrades. We’re building for greater intelligence, autonomy, and speed. For deeper vision, operational excellence, and powerful insights. And then we'll upgrade it all again.
Lumafield is headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and has an office in San Francisco, CA.
About the role:
As an Embedded Systems Engineer at Lumafield, you will be a key contributor to the systems group responsible for the embedded software that powers our industrial CT scanners. You'll work across the software stack—from low-level firmware on microcontrollers to Linux-based applications that interface with sensors, motor controls, and the cloud.
This role is ideal for candidates looking to grow their embedded systems expertise in a high-impact environment. While prior experience is important, we value curiosity, practical engineering ability, and a commitment to building robust systems.
You'll also play an important part in testing and validation, helping ensure that our embedded systems meet stringent reliability and quality standards expected in both R&D and manufacturing contexts.
This role is located in Lumafield’s Cambridge, MA office. You may be required to travel occasionally to between the two offices, and visit our factory in Everett, MA.
What You'll Do:
- Prototype and integrate new hardware peripherals using your driver development and debugging skills
- Develop and maintain automated QA test infrastructure to validate hardware-software integration
- Participate in manual validation and debugging using lab tools (oscilloscope, soldering, harness building)
- Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical, and software teams to ensure end-to-end system reliability
- Write and maintain embedded software in Python and C for our Linux-based scanner systems
- Build and deploy software and operating system components to embedded devices
- Write low-level firmware in C for STM32 microcontrollers, including motor and sensor interfaces
- Support field deployments and help resolve scanner performance issues through test-driven problem solving
About You:
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
- 1–2 years of experience in embedded systems, firmware, or systems software (including internships)
- Proficiency in Python and C
- Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals (version control, testing, modular design, PR reviews)
- Strong familiarity with Linux: command-line usage, system debug, and configuration
- Interest in QA practices, test development, and system validation techniques
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills; able to work cross-functionally
Bonus Points For:
- Experience with Agile development practices
- Familiarity with OTA (Over-the-Air) firmware update systems
- Skills in mechatronics, mechanical prototyping, or electronics assembly
- Knowledge of image processing pipelines or image acquisition system
