About Lumafield:
Lumafield was founded in 2019 to upgrade manufacturing.
We are engineers with deep experience across the product development cycle, from initial ideas to shipping hardware, across industries and specializations, who became frustrated by the cost and complexity of modern manufacturing. So we decided to upgrade it.
Engineers make million-dollar decisions every day, and they need tools that give them the greatest possible insight into their products. By offering unprecedented visibility into products, as well as AI-driven tools that highlight problems and generate quantitative data, Lumafield promises to revolutionize the way complex products are created, manufactured, and used across industries. We started with industrial CT scanning, which for us was the most valuable but underutilized tool in the manufacturing toolbox, enabling us to rapidly inspect essential components non-destructively.
We rebuilt the whole system, from X-ray capture, to computer vision analysis, to web-based collaboration, to the entire business model, making the most advanced manufacturing tech more accessible to every industry. Our company, like our platform, is designed for upgrades. We’re building for greater intelligence, autonomy, and speed. For deeper vision, operational excellence, and powerful insights. And then we'll upgrade it all again.
Lumafield is headquartered in Cambridge, MA, and has an office in San Francisco, CA.
About the role: The Hardware Group is looking for a Mechanical Engineer to help design, prototype, and refine the next generation of our industrial CT scanning systems. You’ll work across disciplines - from motion systems and structures to thermal design and user-facing features - to develop reliable, manufacturable, and innovative solutions.
Our product is a complex hardware-software system. Success in this role requires systems thinking, hands-on prototyping, and the ability to bring structure to ambiguous design problems. You’ll collaborate with electrical, firmware, systems, and software engineers to create hardware that’s not just functional, but delightful to use.
This is a hands-on, in-person role based in our Cambridge, MA headquarters.
What You'll Do:
- Contribute to the mechanical design of assemblies and subsystems, from concept through production
- Prototype, test, and iterate on designs using in-house tools like 3D printers and a full machine shop
- Collaborate across disciplines to integrate mechanical systems into a complex hardware-software product
- Support manufacturing efforts with jigs, fixtures, and design-for-assembly improvements
- Participate in design reviews, documentation, and system bring-up activities
About You:
- Have a strong foundation in mechanical engineering and product development
- Can evaluate problems from multiple angles: user needs, manufacturability, robustness, cost, and aesthetics
- Are fluent in mechanical design and CAD (e.g., Onshape, SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
- Know your way around a machine shop and can rapidly prototype your ideas
- Enjoy collaborating across teams in a fast-paced, hands-on environment
- Are comfortable writing code (e.g., Python, MATLAB) to perform computations or analyze data
Bonus Points For:
- Experience designing motion systems, thermally-sensitive assemblies, or optics mounts
- Background in industrial automation, inspection, or capital equipment
- Familiarity with tolerance analysis, FEA, or thermal simulations
- A portfolio of mechanical designs, prototypes, or shipped products you can share
