Lumotive is pioneering the era of programmable optics—where light is controlled as intelligently and flexibly as software.

At the heart of this transformation is a once-in-a-generation innovation: a flat CMOS-based “general purpose optic.” Lumotive’s Light Control Metasurface (LCM™) beam forming chips can be programmed to function as a beam steering mirror, a lens, mirror, a beam splitter—or any optical function—replacing bulky and mechanical optical components with a fully digital, reconfigurable semiconductor . This breakthrough lays the foundation for a massive shift in multiple technologies—from 3D sensing and imaging to optical networking, free space optical communication, and beyond. Like the shift from analog to digital in electronics, programmable optics will reshape industries from robotics, self-driving cars, AI, defense, and healthcare.
Lumotive’s first commercial application is in LiDAR, where its software-defined beam steering chips are already enabling compact, high-performance, solid-state sensors. These sensors are being deployed today in smart infrastructure, robotics, and mobility systems through leading module makers and solution integrators.

With more than 200 patents and growing commercial traction, Lumotive is delivering the world’s first digital platform for light—and redefining what’s possible in the optical age.

Job Description:

We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineer specializing in New Product Introduction (NPI) with a focus in semiconductor/MEMS packaging for optical devices.  This is primarily an outward facing role engaging with critical suppliers including OSAT, LCOS assembly, and Optical sub-assembly and test.

This is an opportunity to become one of the founding members of the supply chain operations/management team during the critical volume scale up phase for Lumotive’s Light Control Metasurface (LCM).

In this role, you will serve as a critical link between our design and production teams. Your primary responsibility will be to engage with key suppliers to ensure a seamless transition from product design to full-scale manufacturing, facilitating the introduction of new products and driving best practices internally and with suppliers as we ramp into a production environment.  This is a sustaining engineering role.

Responsibilities:

    • Leverage production experience in New Product Introduction (NPI) and advanced packaging to transition Lumotive’s LCM from prototype/ low volume processes to production, optimizing manufacturability and supply chain scalability.
    • Support/own technical engagement and production support with critical suppliers including OSAT, LCOS assembly, and Optical sub-assembly and test.
    • Collaborate with internal design engineers and supplier engineering teams to provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback, ensuring products are optimized for efficient and scalable manufacturing processes.
    • Engage in design reviews and the examination of deliverables necessary for the creation of Technical Data Packages and creation/maintenance of production documentation.
    • Apply and maintain Configuration Management and Quality best practices internally and with suppliers.
    • Engage with continuous improvement and yield assessment activities with OSAT and LCOS supply chain to drive improvement of manufacturing processes and enhance efficiency, quality, scalability, and cost
    • Support prototyping and development of new products, working hands-on to support incoming inspection and test, troubleshoot/FA and provide corrective actions and feedback to improve supply chain performance.
    • Review and document manufacturing processes, including detailed assembly instructions, inspection plans and standard operating procedures for both internal and external users.
    • Coordinate with internal engineering test team and outside vendors with development of production test and deployment.
    • Collaborate cross-functionally to represent production best practices in an innovative and highly flexible start up environment.
    • Support early customer engagement and product fulfillment activities for low volume while helping to define and implement volume fulfillment strategy.

Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field.
    • 10 years of industry experience is required.
    •  Proven experience required in Design for Manufacturability and process design for custom opto-mechanical and opto-electronic systems with a minimum of 8 years of experience working with outside suppliers in manufacturing, process or quality engineering in a production environment.
    • Must be mechanically inclined, analytic, detail-oriented, possess quantitative analysis skills, and self-motivated, a great team member, able to proactively communicate with employees at all levels, delivering excellence in a fast-paced environment.
    • Must have experience with Semiconductor packaging, LCOS, or MEMS assembly with desired focus in optical subsystems.
    • Must have hands-on experience transitioning products into production and managing production supply chains for continuous improvement and sustaining engineering.
    • Must be able to read/review and audit Mechanical drawings.
    • Experience with Advanced Product quality management (APQP/PPAP) for high reliability, Automotive or equivalent.
    • Experience with relevant process areas such as: Chip on chip bonding (CoC) using ACF, TCB, LAB or related technologies, LCOS fabrication, wafer bonding, dicing, inspection, AOI, and Wire bonding,
    • Experience with supplier management and process/production audits.
    • Experience with generation, review and audit of production documentation, process flows, and work instructions required.
    • Preferred to have experience with creation and editing of Mechanical drawings in a production environment and proficiency in CAD software to support tooling and fixture design reviews and supplier design audits.
