We provide lactation support services seven days a week.

The goal of this role is to deliver quality, compassionate bedside patient care in an in-home setting to improve breastfeeding outcomes.

To accomplish this goal, you’ll need knowledge in:

    • Breastfeeding support and guidance for infants from birth through one year of life
    • Evidence-based Indications for infant feeding supplementation
    • Milk collection, handling, and storage guidelines
    • Breastfeeding management strategies for patients of low-risk to high-risk issues.
    • Operation of various brands of breast pumps and their indications for use.
    • Knowledge of normal and abnormal infant feeding behaviors and sleep patterns
    • Knowledge of galactagogues and nutrition requirements to support lactation.
    • Have a thorough understanding of the challenges and needs of high-risk patients.
    • Understand the common feeding challenges of dyads with complex medical situations such as SGA, pre-term delivery, hyperbilirubinemia, IUGR, IGT, and low/high milk production.
    • Latching and Positioning instruction
    • Understands the negative impacts of triple feeding plans.
    • Knowledge of various cultural practices, especially during lactation and the postpartum period.

You must have all of these skills:

    • Performing maternal and infant assessments to identify breastfeeding challenges and conditions requiring medical treatment.
    • Providing non-judgemental, compassionate care, with excellent bedside manner and cultural humility.
    • Assess feeding and milk transfer using an infant scale.
    • Strong clinical skills combined with critical thinking abilities.
    • Providing hands-on instruction on latch and positioning techniques.
    • Able to 'read the room' and exercise judgment in unusual or stressful situations
    • Proficiency in selecting and using feeding devices such as supplemental nursing systems, nipple shields, and finger feeding to improve health outcomes.
    • Skilled at communicating treatment plans and rationale to patients, colleagues, support persons, and care providers.
    • Ability to prioritize and manage workload
    • Counseling skills

Your responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Travel to patient homes in the Greater Los Angeles area to provide clinical lactation care.
    • Conduct lactation consultations in patient homes using clinical strategies to solve common breastfeeding issues in the first 12 months of life.
    • Use clinical and critical thinking skills to assess, diagnose, and treat breastfeeding challenges.
    • Construct age-appropriate and sustainable feeding plans that support the health of the dyad and their feeding goals while prioritizing the patient's comfort and experience.
    • Educate and instruct families on human milk storage and handling guidelines, the use of feeding devices, and various models of breast pumps.
    • Collaborate with colleagues and the Lactation Manager on the patient caseload, treatment plans, patient follow-up, referrals, and challenges identified.
    • Document all patient care and interactions in the company's EHR.
    • Counsel patients on breastfeeding techniques and strategies, individualized to the dyad's unique feeding goals.
    • As part of an interdisciplinary team, make appropriate referrals to MDs, ENTs, breast specialists, occupational and physical therapist pedodontists, and other identified medical professionals to address breastfeeding concerns.
