OPPORTUNITY
Mammoth is seeking a computational biologist with expertise in big data mining and metagenomics to join its growing Discovery team. The Discovery team is responsible for developing novel CRISPR-associated (Cas) nucleases for genome editing and diagnostic applications. 

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing computational workflows to primarily identify Cas nucleases and related proteins for genome editing and diagnostic applications. In addition, the individual will be responsible for designing metagenomic assembly pipelines and occasionally helping to collect environmental data samples. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a diverse group of scientists and engineers to build new tools to beat COVID-19 and cure genetic disease.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Develop tools to classify and characterize proteins of unknown function 
    • Computationally investigate protein diversity
    • Analyze large-scale metagenomic databases
    • Genome assembly and annotation from environmental sequencing samples 
    • Work with experimental team to leverage metagenomics to supplement experimental lab work

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • BS, MS or Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, computational biology, software engineering or a related field
    • Familiar with existing bioinformatics databases, tools, and best practices
    • Proficiency with scripting in Python and R 
    • Proficiency working with Linux systems
    • Experience working with Docker and Conda
    • Ability to contribute to the development of multiple pipelines
    • Understanding of sequencing analysis methods (assembly, clustering, gene calling, functional annotation)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Experience collecting, sequencing, and processing metagenomics samples
    • Experience with RNA structure prediction
    • Experience with protein classification and structure prediction.
    • Experience with Pearl, Java, C++
    • 4 years of experience in metagenomics in academia or industry
