Mammoth Biosciences is a small but growing biotech start-up aimed at harnessing the diversity of nature to power the next generation of CRISPR products. Through the discovery and development of novel CRISPR systems, the company is enabling the full potential of its platform to read and write the code of life.   Based in South San Francisco, California, we are looking for a highly energetic and motivated individual to oversee all accounting and financial reporting activities.  This multifaceted role offers an excellent opportunity for a proactive individual to work with a motivated team of scientists and entrepreneurs in a start-up company culture.

The Director of Finance will be responsible for the accounting operations of the Company to include the production of monthly consolidated financial statements and the maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records and controls to ensure the accuracy of the Company’s reported results.  


    • Oversee the accounting operations, including supervision of contract accounting staff
    • Develop and maintain internal controls appropriate for both GAAP financial reporting and federal grant awards
    • Responsible for month-end close process and preparation of financial statements
    • Develop and prepare financial analyses for management and investor reporting
    • Process payroll with outside service provider
    • Coordinate and oversee annual audits and tax filings 
    • In coordination with HR and outside counsel, maintain stock and option ledgers, and obtain 409A valuations
    • Responsible for all government grant accounting activities, including budget tracking, indirect cost rate negotiations and governmental audits
    • Identify and research appropriate treatment of complex accounting transactions
    • Support management with information to assist in the decision-making process
    • Partner with department heads to develop and monitor operating budgets 
    • Other duties as needed


    • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
    • 7+ years of progressively responsible, relevant experience
    • Experience with government grants awards and related systems and controls
    • Solid communication, technology, analytical and management skills
    • Familiar and comfortable with working in a small, start-up environment, and adaptable to working with all levels of the organization
    • Experience with startups or fast-growing small companies


    • CPA or CMA designation and public accounting experience preferred
    • Familiarity with cost accounting principles
    • Experience with designing and implementing ERP systems
