About You:
Are you an experienced hardware engineer looking for an exciting opportunity to work on autonomy for aircraft? Do you enjoy leading teams of talented engineers while also getting your hands dirty? Would you like to own a significant percentage of key systems for a new autonomy product? If so, you might be a good fit to lead the research and development hardware team here at Merlin.

The Role:

    • Responsible for leading hardware engineering activities in all phases of our research and development lifecycle: proof of concept, prototype design, prototype build, experimental aircraft integration, flight test, and debugging. 
    • Drive the progress of Merlin’s rapid development autonomy system, with primary responsibility for the team designing, implementing, and testing the core platform hardware, ultimately delivering novel aviation demonstrators to R&D customers.
    • Hire, manage, mentor, and develop a strong and cohesive hardware R&D design team, with a range of mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineering skills.
    • Provide hands-on, deeply technical leadership and guidance to team members through tasking, project meetings, and design reviews.
    • Ensure your team’s work is documented according to Merlin company standards by developing high quality drawings, specifications, bills of materials, and interface control documents.
    • This position may require up to 25% travel to our integration / flight test facility in the Mojave area.

Qualifications:

    • BS in Electrical, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering with 10+ years of experience in the hardware (and preferably also software) product industry or an advanced degree with 5+ years of experience.
    • Industry experience working in research and development of complex electromechanical products with embedded software with demonstrated high quality and on time delivery. 
    • Knowledge of aircraft system development considerations, including quality, regulatory, and safety aspects of design, integration, installation, verification, and test.
    • Experience building exceptional engineering organizations with creative hiring strategies to develop quality teams. 
    • Strong organizational leadership skills, experience managing multi-disciplinary hardware teams of 5-15 engineers.
    • Early to mid-stage high-growth company experience.

Bonus

    • Experience with flight management, navigation, guidance, and display systems.
    • Experience with human factors engineering for Part 23 or 25 flight decks.
    • Experience with aviation (ground school, flight school, pilot licenses a big plus).
    • Experience with flight testing of aircraft of any type, including experimental and UAV.
