Construction Manager

We are hiring our first ever Construction Manager to help us realize our mission to better the lives of animals by building a place that’s better for all of us who love them. This role will be responsible for building functional, efficient, and beautiful Modern Animal clinics with as much attention to detail and care as our team brings to every pet and client we serve. 

This role will have deep and specific expertise in contractor bidding, construction, procurement, project turnover and close out as well as have excellent project management and communication skills, and thrive in a cross-functional environment. 

In this role, we are looking for someone who is passionate about pets and the people who love them, and is excited about rolling up their sleeves to bring our mission to life as we grow. This role will require travel sufficient to deliver on our clinic development objectives (up to +/- 50%).

What the job entails:

    • Independently manage the construction process for multiple, concurrent projects
    • Work with the Real Estate team to evaluate potential sites, provide initial cost estimates and advise on technical lease issues
    • Work with the Design Managers during the design phase to help guide the project via updated budgets, build-ability feedback, etc
    • Work with the Procurement Team to confirm and track all owner furnished items and make sure all is provided to the contractor and our teams as needed and on time
    • Work with the New Clinic Opening (NCO) team to make sure each project is complete and ready to be turned over to the Operations Team
    • Work with the Facilities team to provide them with all necessary close out documentation as well as feedback on any facilities issues
    • Work with other internal teams such as Operations, Training, Finance, and others to ensure each projects success
    • Clearly communicate any potential project issues and provide solutions to resolve them
    • Visit the sites several times during the project process
    • Manage and close out punch list with the general contractor
    • Lead weekly project coordination meetings
    • Developed and maintain budgets
    • Create and update project schedules
    • Select and manage general contractors, including bidding, cost control, schedules and build quality
    • Track and manage final approval, inspections and permits required to open each project
    • Review in detail construction drawings and advise on any potential issues as well as provide ideas how to reduce construction cost and time
    • Manage and maintain relationships with vendors

Why you'd be a great fit:

    • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Construction Management, Architecture or related field
    • 5+ years of construction project management experience
    • 3+ years of veterinary, medical and/or retail experience
    • Proficiency in project management tools including gantt charts, spreadsheets, etc.
    • Collaborative go-getter, willing to roll-up sleeves and be hands-on
    • Enthusiasm for thinking outside the box to tackle complex problems
    • Set and deliver on targets with ease
    • Exceptional organization skills & ability to manage multiple project simultaneously
    • Detail oriented and strategic, sweating the small stuff but also seeing the big picture, and able to easily assess the state of progress for projects and how best to accelerate
    • Exhilarated by a high-paced, fast-changing and sometimes unpredictable environment
    • Operate with high emotional intelligence and exceptional communication skills
    • Thorough knowledge and understanding of CAD drawings, Slack, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office Systems
