Director of Coffee

The Director of Coffee reports to the Chief Operations Officer and is responsible for overseeing the entire department of Modern Times Coffee. This includes the sourcing, transport, storage, barrel-aging, roasting, packaging, and QC testing of all coffee products, while maintaining the highest standards for quality. This includes all SKUs sold as whole bean and cold brew, as well as coffee produced for Modern Times Beer products. Together with the CEO, COO, and Sales Director, the Director of Coffee is responsible for the strategic production and sales plan of all coffee products in the Modern Times portfolio. S/He will also work with the COO to constantly measure and report on the key financial metrics of the department. Candidates must share Modern Times’ commitments to quality, safety, business ethics, and continuous innovation.


    • Oversee the sourcing, roasting, and preparation of all coffee while continuing to push Modern Times forward in new areas of coffee innovation
    • Lead, mentor, and manage all coffee-related employees
    • Work closely with our in-house Quality Assurance department to maintain Modern Times’ high quality standards, as well as to continue to grow the Quality Assurance arm of Modern Times Coffee
    • Responsible for coffee quality at all Modern Times Coffee properties, with a focus on staff training and retention
    • Ensure uniformity, consistency, and clarity of quality standards throughout the department
    • Ensure all standard operating procedures are followed at each site, especially with regard to safety
    • Be held accountable to performance metrics and financial performance of each coffee specific site
    • Be responsible for internal and external communication within both the coffee department and other departments within the company
    • Oversee the sourcing of new coffees both through importers and at origin
    • Forecast deliverability issues and communicate these ahead of time to fellow Directors
    • Work alongside managers when it comes to sourcing new coffee, developing new blends, and dialing in roast profiles
    • Help executive management team plan and commission new equipment and purchases for all new production and retail sites
    • Assess general maintenance and upgrade projects at each production and retail site, giving maximum visibility to costs and timelines whenever possible
    • Work closely with the sales team to forecast production needs for wholesale deliverables
    • Represent Modern Times Coffee as needed at local and industry events
    • Operate within the core values of Modern Times, as well as the ability to work in a highly collaborative, 100% ego-free manner within all levels of the organization
    • Adhere to and enforce all applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations
    • Other tasks as assigned 


    • Must be 21 years of age or older at the time of application
    • Able to pass a post-offer, pre-employment background check 
    • Valid San Diego Food Handler certification required
    • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university required
    • Minimum 5 years’ experience in specialty coffee management, with a focus on coffee sourcing and tasting required
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience sourcing coffee at origin required
    • Minimum 2 years’ experience establishing and maintaining standards for an immaculate coffee roasting and preparation areas required
    • Able to oversee all aspects of a supply chain, from origin to cafe
    • Able to handle multiple tasks at one time efficiently and with an upbeat, friendly attitude
    • Able and willing to work early mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends as needed
    • Able to work independently and as a motivated team player
    • Strong interpersonal skills, and a love for meeting and interacting with people
    • Desire to work in a fast-paced, growing company

    • Able to work in a factory/production environment which may be loud, slick, humid, and hot
    • Able to work in indoor and outdoor environment with moderate noise, sometimes slippery floors
    • Able to comply with and enforce all health, safety, and personal hygiene policies and standards


    • Up to 25% travel time may be required

Modern Times began as a 30bbl production brewery in the Point Loma neighborhood of San Diego. Modern Times is named after a beautifully crazy utopian community founded in 1850, and many of our beers are named after real utopian experiments or mythological utopias. Today, we're distributed throughout California, Nevada, Arizona, Maui, the Pacific Northwest and select international markets. We operate a tasting room at the brewery, as well as in San Diego’s North Park community, north county Encinitas, and opened brewery/restaurant locations in Portland and Los Angeles in 2018, with new California locations planned for Anaheim and Santa Barbara the coming year. We brewed our first batch on May 18th, 2013; our beer went on tap for the first time on June 24th 2013; we held the soft opening for the Lomaland Fermentorium tasting room on August 9th, 2013; and our Grand Opening was September 7th, 2013.
In the summer of 2017, we became California’s first-ever employee-owned brewery, with 30% of the company now owned by our employees and the goal of 100% employee ownership in the future. We think that’s pretty radical.
