We are building an ‘Innovation Group’ to address some of the big technical challenges associated with building new infrastructure in space. Members of this multidisciplinary group will work closely with each and with other engineering teams throughout the company to develop new technology. We have an immediate need for an engineer or scientist with a strong background in thermal science and engineering who can push the limits of our current thermal management systems.

This is an opportunity to be a part of something new and exciting, work on rewarding and challenging projects with uncertain outcomes, and requires that candidates be highly self-motivated and champions of problem solving in the company. Candidates will have demonstrated technical excellence with prior work experience, research, or publications. Ideal candidates will have created many tangible products or prototypes and be comfortable with both handling hardware and performing analysis.

Experience and Expertise

    • Deep understanding of the underlying physics of heat transfer (conduction, convection and radiation) and thermodynamics 
    • Familiarity with heat transfer extended to systems with fluid and multiphase flow (familiarity with boiling in Zero-g is a huge bonus) 
    • Familiarity with thermal design and analysis for materials under extreme temperature and corrosive conditions 
    • Thermal management solutions, including pumped fluid loops, radiators, heat pipes, phase change fluids and phase change materials, vapor chambers, thermo-electric devices, heat exchangers, etc. 
    • Comfortable with developing simple models to analyze complex systems on paper, Python or Excel 
    • Analysis expertise; familiarity with commercial solvers for thermal and thermal-fluids problems (thermal desktop, ANSYS, Star-CCM, COMSOL, etc.) 

Education & Work Experience:

    • Graduate level education in engineering or physics (Ph.D. preferred) 
    • 3+ years of work experience, especially in a startup/fast-paced environment 
This is a full-time position in Santa Clara, California. This position requires access to export-controlled commodities, technical data, technology, software, and services. U.S. citizenship, U.S. legal permanent resident status, or protected person status under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3) is required
