About the Role:
Our Engineering Directors are senior technical leaders who balance work on technical strategy and execution with growing, building and leading the Technology organisation. This role would suit an experienced manager and leader, who is ready to take their first step into a more senior position. We will support you with mentoring and coaching to ensure you are set up for success and can continue to grow your career at MOO.
We are looking for an inspiring leader to oversee our growing Platform and IT Support functions. The team of 25 provide a range of critical services to our internal customers and has a presence in all 6 of our locations in the UK and US.
Based together in London, the Platform Crew own all of the services our Software Engineers need to build, test, deploy and run their software. Our Platform is built on AWS with Kubrenetes, using CI/CD technologies such as Docker, Terraform and Helm. The team are constantly iterating and looking for new tools and ways to improve our DevOps culture across the whole of Engineering.
Supporting all our locations, the IT Support team manage and maintain our internal infrastructure, including physical and logical networking, audiovisual services, end-user devices, business applications. If that wasn't enough, they also support our manufacturing facilities and the printing infrastructure they rely upon to make and dispatch our beautiful physical products. Without them, MOO grinds to a halt.
Together, the team of 25 provide critical 24/7 coverage for MOO’s systems, working closely with other teams across Engineering to manage our On Call and Incident Management processes. As MOO continues to grow and evolve our internal support processes need to adapt too and this role will play a big part in defining that.
You will work with the team to formulate the next evolution of our support process. We use Agile and Lean practices in a culture that support DevOps, priding ourselves on keeping it simple and automating as much as possible - without adding unnecessary bureaucracy. You will recognise the answer won't be found in a manual and will be excited about figuring out how. Process zealots need not apply. We will encourage you to look for inspiration across industry to create new and innovative solutions at MOO.
A vital part of this role is to strike a balance of technical knowledge, people management and strategy, alongside day to day delivery of projects, with the added complexity of a team that is geographically dispersed. Top-notch communications and collaboration across your team and stakeholders will be key.
You will be part of the Technology Leadership Team where you will share your knowledge and experience, learn from others and help us continually improve.
You’re an established technical leader. You have experience leading technical teams, managing managers and delivering through others, and know how to work in an organisation with multiple locations or in different time zones. You are comfortable leading a dispersed team of 20+ Operations Engineers / Technical Product Owners / Network Engineers / IT Support Engineers.
You’re technically strong. You have a track record of successful delivery in a technical role, with exposure to Cloud Technologies, Networking or Infrastructure. We don't expect you to be hands-on, but you are able to discuss and translate complex technical capabilities and constraints and turn them into plain English. Working with Product Managers and Engineers in your team, you can guide the improvement of technical capabilities they own. You can converse with engineers and understand both customer needs and the technical architecture of the platforms and services your teams support.
You’re passionate about people development. You love helping others be at their natural best and can adapt your approach to suit the individual knowing when to be directive and when to mentor and coach. You will create a supportive environment to build effective teams that are focussed on delivering great service and creating awesome systems for our internal customers.
You can get stuff done. You are naturally organised and delivery focussed. You are comfortable being accountable for mid-large scale operations and infrastructure initiatives, that may span outside of your team and across the organisation. You can help your team resolve issues and collaborate with your peers and colleagues to remove impediments.
You’re passionate about working in an agile and DevOps environment. We mix things up, we iterate and we improve. You can work with ambiguity and adapt your plans based on feedback and learning. You are an advocate of DevOps culture and will be passionate about supporting the whole Engineering team evolve.
Nice to Have:
- Have led or managed an IT Service Desk team previously
- You might speak at conferences, have a blog or contribute to the broader technology community in some way.
- You might have the advantage of a technology background in high growth dot com customer-facing business or a scaling startup
- You might have past experience in an environment which blends physical and digital products
