Job Summary
MycoWorks is seeking an experienced process engineer/scientist for designing, planning and executing solid state fermentation experiments based on mycology under the direction of Sr. Scientists. The ideal candidate will have a deep aptitude for extending his/her industrial fermentation expertise towards understanding the growth dynamics of mycelia and fungal species in an effort to help the team design fermentation processes best suited at industrial scale. The candidate will work with folks with a variety of expertise within the team and cross-functionally including mycologists and other microbiologists, experts from downstream processing, quality, tech transfer as well as from leather product development.


    • B.S and 5 years of experience, M.S. and 3 years of experience, or Ph. D. and 2 years of experience in chemical engineering, biochemistry, microbiology, mycology or a related field, or a comparable combination of experience and training
    • Prior experience in DOE developing industrial fermentation is a must
    • Extensive experience with experimental design, data analysis, and managing parallel experiments is a must
    • Meticulous at aseptic technique
    • Ability to work successfully independently as well as within a technical team, and cross-functionally 
    • Ability to prioritize tasks, coordinate work with others, and meet milestones in a fast-paced setting
    • Strong written and verbal communications skills, effectively tailored to audiences of different knowledge levels
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
    • Ability to learn new methodologies for changing research priorities

Preferred Areas of Specialization

    • Experience with solid-state fermentation will be a big plus
    • Prior fungal fermentation experience is desired
    • Expertise in process control software like SuperPro or others highly desired

Essential Functions

    • Design, execute and analyze carefully controlled experiments to improve fungal inoculum, substrate, mycelial growth and environment 
    • Sophisticated information management of laboratory data and documentation, including large experimental datasets and SOPs
    • Communicate results of experiments, process design and process control work cross-functionally
    • Assist in transferring technology from lab to production scale
    • Will facilitate key partnerships with outside labs
    • Help establish and maintain fermentation research laboratory
    • Potential management of laboratory technicians and support personnel
