Director of Communications & Marketing

San Leandro, California /

At New Culture, we are making cow cheese without the cow. Dairy cheese is unsustainable and plant-based cheeses don’t work. Ours are sustainable, healthy, ethical, and indistinguishable from current dairy options in taste, texture, and function. Using fermentation to produce dairy proteins, food science to combine those proteins with natural ingredients, and traditional cheesemaking methods to make any cheese of choice, we are bringing about a new culture for the cheese industry. We are a Bay Area-based, venture-backed startup in an exciting growth and rapid expansion phase.

We are looking for a Director of Marketing & Communications to join us in leading the global transformation to an animal-free dairy future. As an early member of the team and first marketing and communications hire, you will have significant influence and responsibility in determining the success and trajectory of New Culture. The ideal candidate is looking for a new challenge in a fast-moving, collaborative environment and has broad marketing experience spanning communications, social/digital, brand, consumer insights, and events.

To apply for this role, please submit your resume and portfolio. Option to submit portfolio as file or provide link to portoflio is given at the bottom of the application.

What will you be doing:

    • Social/Digital: Take ownership of and grow our online presence by generating content/copywriting, building our online network, refining our digital footprint, and launching New Culture into new platforms. You’ll also lead efforts to refresh our existing platforms, ensuring copy/brand alignment and consistency, and conduct analytics across platforms for future initiatives.
    • Brand: Identify opportunities to extend our brand into new channels and lead implementation with our creative firm to capitalize on those opportunities with target audiences. Take an active role in positioning New Culture’s brand extension into physical assets for tastings, industry events, packaging.
    • Consumer insights: Establish strategic vision for and carry out consumer insights research to build and refine our marketing/GTM approach. Deliver actionable recommendations and guidance related to market trends and how New Culture can best engage with customers and partners. This could include customer segmentation, target demographic analyses, focus groups, online tools, and A/B tests.
    • Events: Help to flawlessly execute and attend events for restaurant and chef partnerships, with brand ambassadors, for tastings and pop-ups, and for industry conferences. Work closely with our creative firm to manage design and production of event materials, onsite activities, and vendor coordination. Identify industry events for company attendance and speaking opportunities as well as attend events for brand/marketing research and customer insights.

What we expect from you:

    • Bachelor's degree and 8-12 years of marketing experience in an agency/consultancy, large organization, or start-up where you juggled multiple projects and priorities in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment. Strong strategy, project management, interpersonal, collaborative, and decision-making skills.
    • Proven experience developing and implementing multi-faceted communication and marketing plans across common platforms, from planning and content creation/copywriting to managing an organization’s online presence and conducting consumer insights research/reporting. Thorough understanding of social/digital landscape.
    • Experience with consumer and technical brands, especially food/CPG, wellness, or lifestyle companies and strong network of industry relationships.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with a range of internal and external stakeholders (e.g. PR / marketing / creative firms, partner companies, media, investors) with significant independence and decision-making autonomy. Comfort shifting between strategic and implementation-oriented topics with these stakeholders.
    • Attention to detail and holistic, creative mindset. When it comes to campaign / event / brand execution, no detail is too small and no step of the process can afford to be overlooked.
    • Experience measuring and reporting on the success of marketing initiatives and proposing ideas for continuous improvements.

Even better if you had:

    • Demonstrated ability to translate technical topics for non-technical audiences.
    • Experience in a start-up and/or fast growing organization.
    • Metrics-driven with an eye for creativity. We’re not looking for a designer, but it’d be awesome if you had a design orientation and aesthetic sensibilities plus experience with rebranding.
    • Experience shooting photo/video content or working with creative partners on asset generation.
