NEWNESS is looking for a Backend Engineer to help us accelerate our product development - including new feature delivery, core architecture enhancements, and user growth. Our goal is to create a great experience for our users across a range of browsers and devices: easy to use, a low rate of showstopper bugs, and a code base that supports rapid, iterative development. We are building out new features rapidly, and that means we need a solid base from which to build. You’ll help us ensure we continue building that base while moving our product feature set forward.

What will you do at NEWNESS?

    • Take on projects with independence and a mandate to deliver significant impact quickly.
    • Help us mature our end-to-end stack to support efficient development and a scalable platform.
    • Support the exploration and delivery of technically innovative solutions that deliver outsized user impact.
    • Participate in the management of project priorities, deliverables, and target dates.
    • Review others’ code and designs, providing constructive feedback and supporting high standards.
    • Define excellence, set and follow best practices, and build code that scales with growth. Identify and leverage opportunities to improve processes and outcomes.
    • Actively participate in the interviewing process as the Engineering team grows.

About You

    • At least 6+ years of development experience.
    • Preferably at least 3+ years in a startup environment.
    • A solid foundation in computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and scalable, decomposed design.
    • Proven success building new systems from the ground up.
    • Experience deploying, operating, and supporting what you and others build.
    • Success in improving scalability and reliability as the business drives higher user engagement volumes.
    • Have experience building, testing, and shipping complex backend features leveraged by mobile web, iOS, and desktop clients.
    • Experienced with AWS and success selecting and integrating SaaS platforms.
    • Have well-supported opinions about architecture and design, especially as it relates to the backend
    • Experience with Ruby on Rails.
    • Excellent communication and collaboration skills; ability to present effectively to a non-technical audience.
    • Excited about building and supporting the growth of high empathy and diverse online communities.
    • Comfortable and excited about putting on different hats of all shapes and sizes -- we're a small startup!

Nice to Haves

    • Familiarity with SQL 
    • Experience with serverless architecture.
    • Familiarity with video and audio live streaming.
    • Experience with automated Q/A testing.
    • Experience, or an active interest, in distributed systems.
