We’re a global organisation supporting Kiwi businesses to succeed internationally. Our Digital & Data team is central to this mission, and we’re seeking a Data Governance & Information Manager to lead our data and information management practices.
What you’ll be doing:
As NZTE’s Data Governance & Information Manager, you’ll develop and own the mechanisms for proper governance of data and information across NZTE. Your objective will be to help NZTE gain value from its data and information by ensuring it is well managed, secure, compliant, and ethical.
Key responsibilities include:
• Building and maintaining a detailed audit of NZTE’s core data systems and information assets, including the teams and processes that use them.
• Creating and maintaining ownership accountability of NZTE data systems and information management capabilities.
• Developing standards, policies, and procedures to support and assure ongoing implementation of data governance and information management.
• Leading business data quality forums and engaging stakeholders in tracking and remediating data quality issues.
• Motivating and leading a team of data & information specialists, and a virtual team of stewards to improve data quality.
• Consulting and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure frameworks and policies are fit for purpose, realistic, and compliant with legislation and NZTE’s ethical standards.
• Planning and managing the implementation of data governance and information management policies, standards, and processes.
• Reviewing policies and processes regularly with stakeholders and communicating changes across the organisation.
• Designing and delivering processes to measure data governance and information management maturity, setting clear targets and reporting progress.
• Acting as an evangelist for best practice Data & Information Management and Governance.
• Building a community of committed data & information stewards and fostering relationships across NZTE and wider NZ government agencies.
What you’ll need to be successful:
You’ll be an experienced data and information management professional with strong technical and leadership skills. You’ll bring:
• A degree or higher qualification in IT, computer science, information systems, or a data governance qualification (e.g., DAMA, ARMA, DCAM).
• At least five years’ experience in information or data governance.
• Experience running Data Management/Governance platforms (e.g., Azure Purview) and document management systems (e.g., SharePoint).
• Proven experience working with stakeholders in specialist and technical roles, including IT infrastructure and data analytics specialists, as well as senior executives.
• Experience managing engagements within a matrixed and complex organisational structure.
• Understanding of statutory frameworks such as the NZ Privacy Act 2020, General Data Protection Requirements, and Public Records Act.
• Experience driving change and embedding new data capabilities (e.g., data architecture, enterprise data modelling, data lifecycle management, data science/machine learning).
• Outstanding communication skills, critical thinking, and a proactive, can-do attitude.
• Extensive quantitative research experience and the ability to provide authoritative advice in complex areas.
• Intellectual leadership and the ability to contribute to senior leadership teams through technical leadership, peer review, and quality control.
